What is the hiring process like at Meta?

      Meta reviews

Most toxic culture I have ever experienced

      Software engineer
      Current employee
      Menlo Park, CA
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Good salary and benefits. Relatively open culture, so you can see what's happening in other parts of the company and codebases. Ability to move fast with your projects.

      Cons

The culture totally collapsed after the pandemic hiring spree and the layoffs. In most teams you have to fight for scope (even as a junior) and justify your existence, you never get a break and are always getting judged, you can say something that is not actually bad but another person will change the narrative to give you bad feedback and manage you out, it can also turn in always getting bad contradictory feedback no matter what, things like "you're not independent enough" if you ask something once. Everyone is extremely busy doing working on pointless busy fake work to get points for their PSC (evaluation), there's no quality, not efficiency, everything gets wasted because next half you stop supporting the project or someone else rebuild it from scratch because it was not good enough because you were actually just playing with the metrics. It's extremely stressful and not for the right reasons, it's psychological torture and gaslighting. There are good teams and good managers, but most teams are bad and even if you find a good one chances are you would get reorged, since reorgs happen insanely often and just for the sake of showing "impact". Many non-sensical decisions get approved just for the sake of someone's PSC (justify impact).

Severance at places, poor DS culture, but many great people

      Data scientist
      Current employee
      London, England

      CEO approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

      - income, especially if you joined at the right time - there ARE great people here, especially on the ENG side of things - it is much less vertical than alternative big tech places, this is true - you can move around every year, trying to find a better fit and seeing more of meta — it is diverse

      Cons

      - severance vibes are there, praise Mark - DS culture is super degenerated — hiring process does not even check actual knowledge and experience you need to do meaningful DS work - overall focus on efficiency leads to visibility being more important than value, especially in DS roles. Combined with the previous point this leads to very poor results often - reorgs never stop, never - job security is a lie

      Would Interview again

      Pros

friendly, challenging, and quick interview process.

      Cons

work experience varies from team to team but generally all engineers work hard.

      Great benefits

      Pros

Meta was amazing experience. Ive learnt how to manage programs at scale while working with a great diversity of teams and data Meta rewards schemas are amazing, the benefits are like no where else.

      Cons

The performance review process is a killer, and while its supposed to be non-biased in my org it was biased and a complete waste of time

      NA

      Product manager
      Former employee

      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

great benefits and worked with smart people developing cutting-edge products that improve global connections and monetization

      Cons

The company is in a constant state of reorganization, too focused/wasted valuable work time on personal feelings/opinions/emotions/identities, performance rating is very biased (though they try to remove bias), performance process changes frequently, managers are not valued, recklessly spending money with light oversight, the perception of shady HR practices for hiring, layoffs, and firings

Smooth hiring, but lacks structure and sustainability

      Technical writer
      Current contractor
      Charlotte, NC

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Hiring process was smooth and management was ok.

      Cons

Lack of structure, doesn’t seem sustainable. Company kept pushing to incorporate AI in a role that it wasn’t necessary for.

      Clueless Recruiting Leaders

      Technical recruiter
      Former employee
      Recommend
      CEO approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Great pay Great benefits Worked with awesome people Free food Everything was pretty good until 2023

      Cons

The leadership within the recruiting team, particularly at the director level and above, appears to lack effective decision-making and accountability. The recent wave of layoffs affecting 21,000 employees is attributed to their actions, yet there has been a concerning lack of accountability. Furthermore, the promotion of the individual leader largely responsible for the layoffs raises questions about the company's commitment to both integrity and sound decision-making. In response to the realization that the layoffs were excessive, Meta is now rehiring recruiters, albeit on contracts without RSUs or bonuses. The recruitment strategy appears inconsistent and uninformed, as many individuals with little previous experience at Meta, including notoriously low performers, are being rehired. Furthermore, they have decided to hire many new recruiters from external sources over rehiring numerous previous Meta employees with several years of tenure and consistent high-performance ratings, which is an absolutely disgraceful practice. While some rehired recruiters are extremely deserving, the overall process has negatively impacted many talented and loyal professionals, leaving an incredible sense of resentment for a company that I once held in high regard.
