What are perks and other benefits like at Western Governors University?

-Dishonest -Low pay -Currently phasing out remote employees through quiet cutting After selling the benefits of online college and flexibility to students, after hiring almost exclusively remote employees for the last 5 years, after repeatedly telling us we would not be required to come back in office, we were told out of the blue that we are in fact being forced back into office. WGU claims to value the human connection, collaboration is only valid in person, and people aren’t productive enough at home, yet our entire business model revolves around exactly the opposite. The company has become a beacon of hypocrisy, and the trust of upper management is completely gone. They could tell me the sky is blue and I wouldn’t believe them.

Good mission Flexibility for some staff Middle managers really care about you as an individual

WGU has implemented a poorly planned return-to-office mandate for most staff. Those allowed to remain remote will face limited upward mobility, and if they leave, their positions will be backfilled in Salt Lake. WGU no longer has a VP of DEI, and it's unclear if the DEI team even exists. The decision to centralize the majority of the company in Salt Lake, along with the departure of the DEI leader, suggests that diversity is not a priority at WGU. Culture, once a strong selling point, has been undermined by leadership's lack of transparency, evident in the ongoing layoffs that are happening without any communication to staff. The senior leadership team seems disconnected from both the employees and the market. WGU isn't a top-paying employer, our benefits aren't exceptional, and we no longer offer remote work. So, what motivates people to work here? Leadership might point to "the mission," which we all agree is important, but it's only as strong as the people supporting it. Recent leadership decisions risk replacing our talent with less skilled, more homogenous individuals based in Salt Lake.

Good company culture, benefits are standard, and workplace is positive if on the right team. There's a big shift to move positions to Salt Lake. My department is still remote. Expect a lot of change. If you thrive in that type of environment and are flexible, it will be a good fit.

Communication could be be more clear. With all the changes, people are feeling uncertain.

Working at WGU has provided me so many great opportunities to move up within my career. The people there are great and WGU offers a lot of benefits for employees and family.

The work politics can sometimes be rough but overall isn't too bad if you're not in leadership. It can also be hard to have work / life balance if you are in a position that needs a lot of your attention.

The people, the students, and the product. I would say remote flexibility... but not anymore....

Despite having a product that’s ahead of its time, the leadership at WGU seems stuck in the past. Recently, they mandated that a large portion of remotely hired employees must relocate to Salt Lake City or face termination. This outdated “water cooler” approach is out of touch with the desires of most WGU employees and will lead to overwhelming attrition. The effects will ripple across the university, resulting in system wide disruption, reduced morale, and negative impacts on students. Additionally, I find it odd that leadership changed “paid time off” to “flexible time off” shortly before announcing the relocation requirement. Perhaps the new “flexibility”—which was supposedly for our benefit—was really intended to avoid paying out banked PTO when we quit the following year? Talk about gaslighting! It’s hardly surprising what millionaires will say when they’re trying to boost their bonuses. Maybe their exponentially growing paychecks is the reason for those tearful speeches? Our leadership often praises the value of flexibility for students but fails to recognize the same benefits for their employees. They celebrate how remote learning empowers students, allowing them to pursue higher education without constraints of location or rigid schedules. Yet, when it comes to staff, they undermine these principles, resisting remote work and ignoring its substantial benefits for both the university and workforce. Are they planning to advocate for traditional, brick-and-mortar educational institutions next? Perhaps it’s time they truly practice what they preach or change the online university model to a traditional in-person one. To the small 5% of my remote peers actually considering relocation and any potential applicants: put on a clown outfit now, because to these out-of-touch, Amazon-wannabe millionaires, you’re just a number on their paycheck.

They’ve removed the flexibility of remote jobs. If you currently have a remote job they will not allow for any advancement for those individuals. The communication of this change was handled horribly with a “because I said so mentality” overall the way executives have been changing things doesn’t really make scene.
