What are perks and other benefits like at eBay?

      eBay reviews

Great company overall, but serious equity issues in Product Marketing

      Product marketing manager
      Former employee

      Business Outlook

      Pros

eBay has strong brand recognition. The company offers flexible working in terms of remote vs hybrid, decent benefits, and opportunities to learn from a large scale global organization. The healthcare options are okay.

      Cons

My experience as a Black employee in the Product Marketing organization was deeply disappointing. There are significant disparities in how Black employees are treated and valued compared to others, particularly in titles, compensation, and opportunities for advancement. Many Black employees are in contractor or lower level titles, and there’s a noticeable lack of representation in leadership. While the company as a whole isn’t terrible, the culture within the Product Marketing org does not reflect true inclusion or equity. If you’re a person of color, I would advise being cautious and asking direct questions about diversity, advancement, and support during the interview process.

      Pros

Great insurance benefits and benefits in general, for work from home.

      Cons

They hire you, hype you up about growth opportunities and the path you’ll take, only to constantly change it and leave you stagnant. You’re trained initially, but not continuously, and put metrics pressure on you. ESPECIALLY the resolution metric, which is mostly based on how customers feel about the company and not the actual representative. I am overworked and feel under appreciated. They then added the UK line to our calls and never actually trained us on how to deal with those customers. I initially loved working here, but I feel like our wants, needs, and work life balance are overlooked. We used to brush up on training, but since they laid a ton of people off last year, we are overworked and not provided with many “continuing education” opportunities, which would help with metrics. Instead, we are asked to work, and also work overtime, lots of overtime. When I started working here I was told I would be in my position for only six months, however it’s going on three years. Also I was told I would take a certain path of training, but that also has changed. I’ve asked many times for opportunities to move to other departments, but those requests go ignored. I’m almost to my breaking point and this is very stressful.

It's who you know but the benefits are good

      Team developer

      Pros

Easy to move around within the company. As long as you befriend the manager and team leader, you'll be on their good side. The benefits are great and if you have health issues, the company can be accommodating, also, if you're planning a family the benefits are above average compared to other companies. Most positions are work from home so that's a plus in many ways.

      Cons

On the other hand, reserved employees who prefer to focus on their work may struggle. Befriending your manager and team leader is crucial for success, as most positions are work-from-home, and video conferences/chat are the main ways to connect. Teammates are expected to be available throughout their shifts (except for breaks and lunch), while leaders have more flexibility for personal errands whether you're hourly or salary. This disparity in expectations felt unfair.

      Pros

The benefits are great considering I work from home.

      Cons

I have been with eBay for nearly one year. When I was hired, I was told many times that I would advance quickly, and would not be in my position past 6 months. This was a big lie! Not only am I still in this position, but they’ve placed a freeze on their original “employee” matriculation plan of buy/sell/m2m. We had a meeting the other day to meet and talk with the new upper leadership and there was not one brown person on the panel. They were all white (and one Asian). This was very hurtful and disappointing. It sends the message that out of all of their thousands of employees, they couldn’t find 3-4 people of color (not just black, but of any other race) to make their leadership team more diverse. Their “Lower level”employees are very diverse and the company is huge, so I’m sure they could have made that panel more diverse. I feel extremely stagnant at eBay and as much as I’d love to stay with this company (just out of comfort and habit), I am actively seeking employment elsewhere. They say you can move up, they also offer temporary opportunities, but good luck with being seen and given that opportunity. When you start, they tell you to “be good to each other because you never know who will be your leader”. Basically, they tell you, you have to be “favored” by someone to actually move up. Some of the team leaders are great, but many of them don’t truly earn their place and it shows. And lastly, but most importantly, CREATE A FAIR METRICS PROGRAM!!!! Upper management makes all of these absurd policies that are not in the members favor, and when they take surveys, their dissatisfaction with eBay reflects on the representatives who try to help them, and we miss out on bonuses, pay increases, and other important things. It’s not fair. And the metrics we are to meet are unrealistic…. Place a member on hold and check in with them every 2 minutes… members HATE that! As a consumer, I hate when a rep comes back on the line just to tell me to keep holding. It’s silly! We also are penalized for transferring members…. If I am in buy and I get 10 back to back dispute calls, I have to transfer them!!! Why are MY metrics penalized because a member selected the wrong option when they call ? You now refuse to cross train, so I’m not able to help them. My point is, your metrics and methods for GCX are created by people who sit in an office (or at home) behind their desk and don’t have to actually deal with members, take calls or do any of the things we do! And even if at one point in time they did take calls, I’m almost sure it was eons ago!

Pay is very good and each year you get an increase depending on how well you have done the previous year as well as if you went beyond your role and did things like creating reports on how something is or isn't working etc. Benefits are great, VHI, EAP etc.

      Cons

You're expected to work on other lines if they are busy so everyone is cross trained but it's the bare basics which isn't helpful when you are asked difficult questions. They pretend to care about your mental or physical health and advise you not to come in if unwell but when you go back, they have to do a return to work interview and the questions asked make you feel like you've caused more work for everyone for being our sick. "How do you think your absence affects the team and department overall" "what will you do in the future to make sure this doesn't happen again" Hard to progress in certain roles and interview process is weird, they use a STAR method
