      Associate Interview

      Nov 19, 2015
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Toronto, ON
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Boston Consulting Group (Toronto, ON) in Nov 2015

      Interview

Background: I didn't attend a "target school" and so I missed out on their annual recruitment (campus recruitment, networking events e.t.c). By the time I found out, it was too late and so I decided to reach out to people within my professional network and ended up getting in touch with a Partner at BCG. He referred me and days later I got an e-mail confirming my interview. I was concerned that my chances of getting an offer was low because they had already finished hiring Associates for the year but later I found out that they hire year round. Interview Prep: I had one month to prepare for my interview and having zero background in case interviews, I started prepping right away. Practice is KEY! Case books are great but having live practice helps you think quickly and perform under pressure. Regarding the behavioural part of the interview, know your resume inside out. Treat the interview like a conversation/an opportunity for them to get to know you. Interview: First round: two 45 min interviews with Consultants. Breakdown: 15 min behavioural and 30 min case. First case was market entry and second case was cost reduction. Both cases had at least 2-3 exhibits that you have to do calculations for and analyze on the spot. In terms of case description, the case isn't just "Should XYZ enter the European market? Yes or no?", the interviewers provide a sufficient amount of background detail so it's not as broad as people make it out to be. Their feedback: My interview was on Friday, I heard back on Wednesday. One of the interviewers called me and provided feedback. He said in terms of the behavioural part, I aced it and they really enjoyed getting to me know/would see themselves working with me/be on the same team. However in terms of the case, although my structure was good, I was unable to quantify the information fast enough/to their standards (analysis and calculations). My advice: You hear people stress that having a good approach is better than having the right answer. I agree with that but having the right answer definitely helps! Analyzing data and doing accurate calculations is crucial in consulting and you must demonstrate that in the interview. Although I didn't get the job, I learned so much just from preparing for my interview and I plan to keep in touch with everyone I've meet throughout the process. I'm writing this long review because prior to my interview, reading Glassdoor reviews definitely helped me in preparing and so it's my way of paying it forward. Present yourself as well-rounded and go in with a positive attitude. Regardless of whether you get the job or not, keep things in perspective and know that there are endless opportunities out there. Stay hungry and best of luck!

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

      - Tell me about a team conflict that you've experienced and how did you deal with it? - *Points to something on me resume (an internship abroad)* Tell me about this. The questions are broad so it's important to make sure you keep your answer structured and don't ramble.
