      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. I interviewed at Expensify.com in Aug 2022

      Interview

First, you send them an email answering five questions on their website. This should replace a resume and help them know what drives you. After about a week, you get a reply to let you know if you're a fit or not. If you are, you're asked to schedule a meeting for them to get to know you more. No technical questions here, just chit-chat. After this, the interviewer will let you know if you're a match and send you a take-home challenge. In my case, I think the interviewer forgot and I had to remind them. The take-home is untimed and you're supposed to build a full-stack application using PHP, JS, jQuery (if you want) and an API. No external libraries are allowed. After completing the take-home, I submitted it but didn't hear back from them for weeks. I eventually reached out to confirm what was happening and I found out that the recruiter had failed to forward my solution to the engineer to review it so I had to remind them again. After about a day, I got a response from the engineer reviewing my solution telling me he'd like to move me forward to the technical interview phase. During the technical interview, he asked me a bunch of trivia questions, asked why I wanted to work with Expensify and we discussed my solution. He said he'll get back to me to let me know if I was to be moved forward. After about a week, I still hadn't heard back which was weird so, I reached out to him and he said my recruiter should have communicated with me and so he had to remind them. After that, they (the recruiter) reached out and told me I had been moved forward to the onsite which from what I had read online was supposed to be the final step. After some time, I sent them an email asking for the meeting link for the remote onsite and it was then they told me that the onsite was actually for the next Tuesday which is fine, they said they'd send me a scheduled email for the onsite, a day later I asked them about the schedule email and they told me I had to first of all meet with a director to discuss my life goals, while this was interesting, it was weird that I was only hearing about this now. After the discussion with the director, I was moved on to the final step which was the remote onsite. The first challenge for me was the JavaScript challenge where you have to build a game with Vanila JavaScript and you have an hour to complete it. At the end, I was asked questions about the game, and after that they told me "Unfortunately...". I believe if you go past that you have casual chats and another technical interview with PHP. I think what I don't like about the whole Expensify process was that it took me basically two months and some weeks to get a rejection.

      Application

I interviewed at Expensify.com (San Francisco, CA)

      Interview

I spoke to a recruiter, during which I was asked questions about my background. I asked them why they didn't have any black people on their team. They responded that they only hire the "best people" (what that has to do with being black is a mystery to me), and that the most important qualities were about being excited and being a culture fit, and that knowledge and experience don't matter so much. Furthermore, I asked her multiple times about what qualities they are looking for in an Engineer, and did not receive a clear response. She said she would send me a coding challenge but never did, and I was rejected the next day. I can only presume that I was rejected because I asked the above legitimate question regarding their working conditions.

Hi XXXXX, I want to apologize for any confusion that I caused in responding to this question. The question around Diversity & Inclusion is always a valid one and if it had an easy solution, the question wouldn’t need to exist. Unfortunately, it does and it’s something we work hard at in our recruiting strategy. We cast a wide net looking for genuinely passionate team members. I believe you came from Women Who Code, one of our targeted areas to bring more women into our engineering team. We recruit from a number of diverse locations and universities to ensure we are continuing to develop our team with the best, talented, passionate people from all over the globe. We have also posted on our blog about the type of person that succeeds at Expensify which can be found here: https://blog.expensify.com/2016/06/03/rule-1-get-shit-done/ We sincerely wish you the best of luck in your job search! Thanks! Alana
