      Software Engineer Interview

      Jun 19, 2020
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Indianapolis, IN
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Genesys (Indianapolis, IN) in Nov 2019

      Interview

It was not a good interview experience at all. It was clear to me that the interview team was not experienced in interviewing external candidates, and lacked in professionalism. Despite my almost 2 decades of experience in the industry, my numerous awards, accolades, my leadership experience, and despite my very relevant skills to the role I applied for (which compared to my resume, I was overqualified for), I was told my skills “were not relevant”. When asked about the testing processes at my current position, and after I explained it to them, the interviewer was borderline confrontational, and criticized the things that were being done at my current company, even though I was clear that I was simply answering their question, and not suggesting that the way my company did it was the right way, and that I was in the process of changing our processes (which is the reason I was brought in in the first place). When asked why I was applying for the role, I told them I was interested in a more challenging role, and in the platform they were developing and I gave the technical reasons behind that. This is usually a pro-forma question which is pretty open-ended, but I was then grilled for the next 8 minutes about how the role I applied for was NOT challenging (yes, self-denigrating their own role) and was pretty much told why I should not take the job, because it was not that different from what I was currently doing (which is not true at all). It was odd to be talked out of a position by the person offering it, for no reason. Despite it being an interview for a Software Engineering position, I was not asked ONE programming or white board question. The final straw: they said I don’t have relevant experience in a certain area, even though in a previous role, I was on the dev team that helped to develop the platform that is a competitor to the product they internally use, which was the very skill they said I had no relevant experience in! That is not even the whole story, but that is all I will post here. I never felt more glossed over as a candidate in my entire career. It is like they went out of their way to ignore what was on my resume and its relevance. In my opinion, and as I outlined above, there are some serious issues with their interviewing and hiring practices on that particular team I applied for (and I say this as someone who is on a hiring panel myself for my current company). I hope this is not a widespread thing. Genesys would benefit from training their interviewers, as they do at companies like Facebook and Google. They are missing out on good talent.

      Interview

I was contacted by the interviewer by email. She got my email from my Linkedin. We had one interview and then three months after they replied me saying that they have reviewed my application and it will no longer be considered. It was a really nice interview though very conducive environment. It was more like a friend chat and that made me very relaxed and confident.
