I applied through college or university. I interviewed at Goldman Sachs
Interview
Three back to back interviews, each with own purpose. First tested hypotheticals, second tested banking knowledge and lastly about your past behaviour. Banking knowledge - how does a bank make money, debt vs capital/etc.
I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Goldman Sachs (London, England) in Dec 2015
Interview
Applied online, had a successful telephone interview and was invited for "final interviews" at the London office. I was told that I would have at least two back-to-back competency based interviews and if I was successful in those then I would have an interview with a VP. The back-to-back interviews were very different in style. The first interview being technical and motivational questions, giving examples of working with data etc, overall hard questions. The second interview was much more relaxed and more conversational, asking about my CV and experience so far. After both of these I was told to wait in London and received a call inviting me to a final interview with as VP later that day.
I arrived on time and was seated at the internal audit department where I waited for over 30 minutes to be seen! When I was eventually called I had a surprise interview with a member of the department which was very tough consisting of all technical questions. Interviewer was not friendly and gave limited feedback on my ideas. Finally, I was able to see the VP who was very friendly and interview was relaxed. Mostly asked questions about me, my CV, motivation, but also tougher scenario questions.
Overall a good experience. Perhaps the waiting and very tough surprise interview before main VP interview was intentional to see how you cope under pressure, in fast-paced environment etc. Also did not expect 4 interviews in the same day.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Competency interviews: Why Goldman Sachs? Why do you think you're right for the job? What impact do you think the Internal Audit department has on the firm? Why this role and not the others? In what ways do you think data is important to our business? Give examples on when you've worked with data. How did you deal with large amounts of data and outliers? What does the outlier tell you?Tell me about how you like to work in a team. Run me through your CV without looking at it.
Surprise technical interview: Tell me the associated risks and controls with a payroll process. What impact? What improvements would you make?
Final interview: Tell me about yourself. Why this firm and not its competitors? Why do you think you'd fit in here? Scenario questions.
