      Sales Development Representative Interview

      Oct 6, 2017
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      New York, NY
      No offer
      Neutral experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Greenhouse Software (New York, NY) in Sep 2017

      Interview

I applied to Greenhouse Software online. A week or so after applying I was contacted by a recruiter to do a phone screen with a manager. The phone screen was really more of a conversation then an actual interview and I found that to be very refreshing. After passing the phone screen, you are sent a writing exercise. I found the writing exercise to be exploitative, but I will get into that later. If you get pass the writing exercise then you are invited into a FOUR HOUR in person interview. You meet with 6 different people. I'm going to get more in depth about this as well. The writing exercise: The assignment that they ask you to do is a laborious task. I know that they are just trying to give you insight to what you would be doing at Greenhouse but it's still a laborious and time consuming task. Especially since they do not give you any feedback. Even though I passed the writing exercise I still would have liked feedback on what I did well and what they thought I should improve on. They ask you to list the pros and cons of their competitors. Find TEN REAL LEADS that aren't customers with Greenhouse already and list the actual names of each lead. Then you have to write two emails. You had to write one initial email and then a follow up email. This whole exercise took me about two hours to do. I kind of feel like they also ask you to do this, so they can get free work out of you and use the leads that you found and the emails. I could be wrong but it definitely felt like that. On-site Interview The interview is 4 hours and you will meet with 6 people. There is a coffee break in-between. I thought that was very nice of them, but 4 hours is a really long time. Prior to the on-site interview they let you know that while you are there they will be using their computer to type notes about you during the interview. I appreciate them letting me know that upfront, however how are you actually listening to the candidate speak if you are typing the whole time? I never understood why people write or type frivolously during interviews. There is no way you are actually listening to the candidate. Take the time to actually listen to what the candidate is saying. Make eye contact. You might miss something very important because you are too busy typing the whole time. To ask all those insightful and deep questions only to write/type a summary of what I said, you are bound to miss information or type in wrong information. After the interview, you will meet up with the recruiter and you all will give over benefits information and salary info, when you will able to work, etc. She will ask if you have any questions about it. I’m going to be really honest right now. That is not a sign that you got the job. I repeat that is not a sign that you got the job or that you are getting a job offer. She told me they would contact me in 2-3 days. Unfortunately I did not get an offer. They sent an email saying that it was a really hard decision and I should be really happy that I made it so far and offered to provide me feedback. I took them up on the feedback offer and needless to say it was pretty vague and short. Which was surprising to me because you would think all those notes that they were taking about me during the 4 hour long interview, I’d get way more insight. I was told that everyone really did enjoy talking to me and was so hard to make a decision, but they just didn’t think that I was passionate about sales. I asked her what did I say or do to make them feel that way and she really couldn’t give me an answer. She just said that I was awesome and I shouldn’t change my awesomeness. That is frustrating because I ‘am passionate about sales. I would not have applied to job if I weren’t passionate about sales. Anyone who is in sales knows that sales is a hard job. It is not for the weak or lazy. In order for you to be successful in sales you have to be passionate about it or else you will fail. I feel like if they felt like I wasn’t passionate about sales they could have figured that on my first initial phone screen to be honest. Anyway, I really did enjoy meeting everyone and it is upsetting that I wasn’t selected. I’d just recommend you all listen to the candidate and make eye contact. I understand that you all are just trying to take notes, but it is really important to actually listen to what your candidate is saying.

      Interview

A responsive, professional , and engaging process that I found refreshing given todays standardization of the interview process. Every scheduled interview was on time, the people were pleasant, and they made a huge effort to reduce all bias in the process. A standout company.

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Greenhouse Software (New York, NY) in May 2022

      Interview

It all started when I was contacted by the Talent Acquisition Manager asking for a time to chat and discuss the role. I got to the first interview, very well structed but also very canned and robotic. The interview itself wasn't the easiest interview ever was pretty difficult. After I got done with the first interview they said they would let me know if I will get move forward in a few days, around 3 days later I found I didn't get moved forward. I asked why this is and asked for feedback, they just told me that my hunger for sales and the competitive edge fell a bit short, which I don't think it did and feel like this is a false rejection. Other then that no complaints.

      Application

The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Greenhouse Software (Ban Bo I Rem) in Nov 2020

      Interview

--Ariana, Director of Talent Acquisition
