      Software Engineer Interview

      Nov 7, 2019
      Anonymous employee

      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied in-person. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Greenhouse Software (New York, NY) in Oct 2019

      Interview

Overall, the interview process was the most pleasant interviewing experience I've had, from start to finish. Greenhouse moved quickly, was transparent about next steps, and every person with whom I interacted treated me with respect and kindness. The first contact came from a technical recruiter at Greenhouse who, I believe, initially found me on LinkedIn. One week later, we had a brief HR telephone screen, and later that day via email, I was asked to move forward to the next round. Due to scheduling conflicts on my end, the technical screen was scheduled about a month later. It was a one-hour remote coding exercise where I also talked through my solution on the phone with a Greenhouse engineer. I was allowed my choice of language to use, and it was a multi-stage feature build, where I received specs and was asked to progressively add more functionality over four parts. I appreciated that the exercise was pretty relevant to the work Greenhouse performs (onboarding and recruiting), which ended up being the case for all technical questions asked throughout the process. Again, the same day, I was asked to move forward. Three days later, I came to Greenhouse's offices for an onsite. I really loved that before the interview, I was emailed a full agenda with the names of each person that I would meet. In all, I spent about six hours there comprising two coding exercises and a whiteboard systems design exercise paired with engineers, lunch with a technical manager, a behavioral interview, and chats with HR and Recruiting. Although it was certainly a long day and all interviews are stressful, by the end, I was pretty convinced that this was a company with whom I wanted to work. Every engineer that I spoke with was encouraging, down-to-earth, and truly passionate about what they do, which has not always been my experience while evaluating companies. It shouldn't have been a surprise, but as an onboarding and recruiting company, they really practice what they preach in making the entire interview process as seamless as possible.

      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Greenhouse Software in Feb 2025

      Interview

During the one-hour screening call, I was informed that the total interview process would take approximately seven hours—nearly a full workday. It began with a one-hour assessment, followed by three additional technical assessments and two one-hour interviews if the initial assessment was passed. While this might be feasible for someone who is currently unemployed, for me, it was an immediate red flag. For a company that aims to improve the hiring process, I was confused why they would make it so difficult for job seekers, until I remembered that their clients are the corporations not the people seeking employment. That said, I have strong reservations about live coding assessments, particularly when they feel unnecessarily restrictive and counterproductive. In my experience, the interviewer himself acknowledged the difficulty of the challenge, and while the company emphasized that we could use "tools" like ChatGPT, they also imposed strict limitations on how they could be used. If the goal is to evaluate how candidates perform in a real work environment, then the assessment should reflect that—allowing candidates to use tools as they naturally would on the job. Additionally, I was initially told I could work in silence, yet I was frequently interrupted with questions throughout the assessment, which made for a disjointed experience. Another aspect I find perplexing is that live coding sessions are often conducted with random employees rather than the hiring manager. In most industries, interviews are between the candidate and decision-makers—not with various team members in a high-pressure, performative setting. The takeaway: If you're comfortable with live coding, you'll likely do well. If not, prepare as best as you can, stay resilient, and don’t let it discourage you.

Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. We understand that the interview process is a significant investment of time, and we continuously evaluate our approach to ensure it is both effective and respectful of candidates’ commitments. Our goal is to create a structured and fair process that allows candidates to showcase their skills in an environment that reflects real-world problem-solving. We strive to create coding assessments that simulate the work an engineer at Greenhouse would perform, which may include the use of generative AI tools. We welcome transparent use of generative AI in the interview process for certain roles with the expectation that candidates can thoroughly explain the prompts they create and/or discuss in-depth the technical decisions they make. We appreciate your perspective on the use of tools during the session and will take this into consideration as we refine our approach. We also value the involvement of multiple team members in our hiring process, as collaboration is a key part of our culture. We appreciate your time and feedback, and wish you the best in your job search.

Interviewer was receptive and helpful, created a collaborative environment. I only got to the initial technical screen. I was conducted in a coder pad environment with a single question that required multiple steps to fully complete.
