Their application process consists of emailing their general careers email address with a copy of your resume and answering their list of questions.
I emailed this to Herb, and after following up twice on the original email over the course of 3 weeks - I still have not heard anything back.
Be wary, this is an organization with zero respect for candidates and won’t even lift a finger to spend 10 seconds sending a copy and paste rejection.
I applied through other source. The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at HERB (Toronto, ON) in Oct 2018
Interview
I was approached by the CEO on LinkedIn based on my profile, experience running my own consultancy and skills. At no point was I asked to submit a resume, shared a job posting/description or asked about salary/compensation expectations. To start I was contacted by phone by a junior HR employee.
Afterwards, I was sent a document with a number of questions asking how I could improve the company's email marketing. HERB has spent most of it's time building a massive social media following and impressive video content. However, their email efforts were noticeably lacking so I spent a weekend preparing a document that covered all aspects of improving email copywriting, design, development and deployment to increase opens and click through rates. I shared strategies that could be implemented with their current software tools to use email as a channel to drive e-commerce sales for their online store.
I was then invited to their office for a 2hr interview to discuss the document I had prepared. There was 2 interviews, each lasting an hour. I had also prepared a portfolio for these interviews that contained a handful of email marketing and automation campaigns I've worked on in the past. Both interviewers read from a list of questions off their computers and between the two interviews there were some repeated questions. The first interviewer praised my document and lamented they could use someone like me. Unfortunately, neither interviewer took the time to review my portfolio or ask any questions in relation to the work inside it. Despite this, I had believed the interviews went well, I was honest and authentic and open to discussing all the work experiences I've been through, both positive and negative, as I believe both to be very helpful.
I was then invited back for a third interview with the VP of Revenue and Strategy for another hour. This was the weakest interview by far, only because my document was never addressed at all. The interviewer read from a list of questions on his computer and about 40-50% of the questions were repeats of what I had been asked previously. I took this as a test, to see if I would second guess myself and change my answers, so I decided to remain consistent. Even though I brought in my portfolio again, 0% of the questions asked were about my portfolio work. I was expecting questions about my process, strategies and why I made the choices I did in my previous work. At the end of the interview I asked a couple questions in regards to HERB's future strategies and business goals. I was told I would receive a follow-up after the weekend.
Then all of a sudden, the very next day, I was sent a message from a no-reply email address only stating that, "we've decided not to move forward" with no explanation as to why. Shocked and disappointed by this extremely vague, nondescript and impersonal message I wrote an email to everyone's email address I had from the HERB team politely thanking them for their time and consideration and suggesting it would be of "significant professional benefit" if they could explain why the entire process was dropped.
At the time of this writing I still haven't received any response.
I've been left to presume that the HERB team will take my work and advice and implement my suggestions without hiring me. It's my hope that the HERB team will see this and hopefully treat future interviewees with much more dignity, respect and professionalism than they showed me. It's also my hope that any future interviewees will proceed with caution when dealing with HERB.

Question 1
How would you turn social media followers into email subscribers?
Thank you for your honesty and candor. We appreciate all feedback, as our culture is based on learning and continuous growth. We appreciate the time that candidates put in to the challenge document, as it allows us to see how you would apply your experience in the role. The interview process is structured to ensure consistency across interviews to eliminate bias between candidates. However, we do apologize if there was repitition in terms of questions - we are working to improve the interview process on an ongoing basis. Moving forward we will also ensure that interviewers take the time to review any documents candidates bring in. Moving forward we will ensure that candidates receive more detailed feedback when they have reached the in-person interview portion should we not wish to move forward with them - thank you for this feedback.
