The interview process was longer than expected and was one of the most unique in my career.
I went through several phone screens over the period of a couple of weeks; first with their internal recruiter and once with the hiring Director.
A week after those conversations I was scheduled for the first panel interview which took several hours. After a week of no contact, I was brought in again for a second round of panel interviews. In all, I met with 13 people about the job and took two full days off of my current work to apply for the position.
During the process I asked numerous leading questions and it is apparent that there isn't internal consensus on the requirements of the position. The VP of the organization had one idea, the team of engineers that I would be managing had another, and the hiring Director had a third. This was further illustrated by the questions I was asked during the interview, which didn't match the job description.
A week after the last panel interview I was contacted (applause here, many orgs don't do this!) and told that the opportunity was not going to be offered to me as I was not technical enough. This conclusion speaks to the confusion about the positions requirements and a lack of understanding of my technical background and expertise.
