      Quantitative Researcher Interview

      Nov 12, 2015
      Anonymous employee
      New York, NY
      Accepted offer
      Positive experience
      Difficult interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1+ week. I interviewed at Jane Street (New York, NY) in Nov 2015

      Interview

I first received a phone interview. I stumbled on the first question (easy AMC-level rate question that I messed up quite badly) but did okay on the next two; had about 15 minutes left to just ask questions. I received an invitation to an on-site interview the next day. I had six interviews over the course of the day, ranging from trading to coding, including one where they were trying to see which position I would fit in best and one which was a casual discussion over lunch. It was overall a pleasant but challenging experience. I was quite surprised that I received an offer since I am a freshman and did not, in my opinion, do very well in any of the interviews (did not mess up either I guess). The only downside I would say was possible the relocation to a smaller room, which only seemed lackluster in comparison to the first room. And that the sweater they handed out at the end has some creases on the edges that are really getting on my nerves.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

You have two decks of cards: a 52 card deck (26 black, 26 red) and a 26 card deck (13 black, 13 red). You randomly draw two cards and win if both are the same color. Which deck would you prefer? What if the 26 card deck was randomly drawn from the 52 card deck? Which deck would you prefer then?

      Interview

The process began with serveral online tests for maths and logic. They gave a personal interview to get to know the candidate better and evaluate fit for the company/role, then held a technical interview covering maths and logic problems.

      Interview

Fun and filled with unexpected questions. The questions rely on fast thinking and fast calculations, and sometimes intuition because there is no sufficient time for me to work through the whole problem.

      Interview

We started with a bit of small talk, followed by some probability questions. Ended with some basic algebra questions, Make sure to ask questions if you have any. Good experience, feels like the interviewer was trading.
