      Merchandising Coordinator Interview

      Aug 31, 2013
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Elmhurst, IL
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at McMaster-Carr (Elmhurst, IL)

      Interview

I got contacted through Monster.com by a recruiter. She talked to me briefly on the phone about my interests, desire for the job, etc. I then got offered to interview on-site, where I spoke to the recruiter, as well as three members of the staff who were in the same department/section of the company. The recruiter, as well as the first two members of the staff, were pleasant and appeared to be interested in my (somewhat) unorthodox educational background. The third interviewer was a little brusque and seemed dismissive, though this may have just been some personality tics (he was just awkward). Each of the interviewers asked roughly the same questions, about my educational background, my experiences in previous internships, how I would function with the more rote, data-related work for this position, etc. I thought I did reasonably well in my interviews. I did *not* do my research on the company, which I'm sure looked poorly -- I was asked by the HR recruiter how much I knew about McMaster-Carr, and I said something like, "Not very much." Alas! The job pays well, and the people seemed friendly. Good experience to interview with several people in succession. Be more prepared than me!

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

I was asked by the HR recruiter to go on their web site and look for a specific kind of product. I had to 'work through' my selection process -- how I would look for this product, what questions I had, etc. I don't think they asked this 'question' very well, but they were clearly testing for some certain skills ... that I must not have had... So, lesson: demonstrate more confidence! And be mentally prepared for this kind of 'test.'

      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Elmhurst, IL

      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at McMaster-Carr (Elmhurst, IL) in Oct 2018

      Interview

Interview process was quick and fairly painless. I was contacted by a recruiter who found my resume on Indeed. A week after our phone screener I was invited for an on-site interview and about 3 business days after, they made the final decision. Although I didn't get an offer I appreciate how well run the process was. During the two hour on-site interview they managed to squeeze in a building tour, plant tour, second interview with HR, interview with the hiring manager, and a briefing with someone already in the role on what to expect.

      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Cedar Rapids, IA
      No offer
      Positive experience
      Easy interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 1 week. I interviewed at McMaster-Carr (Cedar Rapids, IA) in Oct 2018

      Interview

I was recruited online and offered an initial phone call screening. We set up an interview time for later that same week, and I heard back from them less than a week after the interview.

      Interview questions [1]

      Question 1

They asked if I had looked at the company website. Most of the phone call consisted of them providing me with a more detailed explanation of the job, and answering my questions. I was also asked a few questions about my resume, including explaining how I had started some of my jobs.

      Elmhurst, IL

      Positive experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at McMaster-Carr (Elmhurst, IL) in May 2018

      Interview

Came in and was given a tour of the warehouse. Spoke to four employees over the course of three hours, in addition to a former merchandising coordinator who was able to give me a better idea of what the position entailed. Was asked about my education and work history--pretty standard stuff.
