      Director Interview

      Apr 24, 2017
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      No offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 7 weeks. I interviewed at NIKE in Mar 2017

      Interview

Let me set the stage for this one. I have had multiple recruiters, consulting firms and peers in the industry advise me on how well I would fit into the Nike culture and what a great match my skills would be. I've had multiple recruiters submit me to multiple Nike roles, absolutely convinced I was a shoe in for the role - Nike recruiters, 3rd party recruiters and an internal referral. That being said, of all of the above, I've had 2 interviews with Nike. One I already submitted a review and now #2 - a Director role I submitted my resume and application for on Nike careers. Two interviews, no offers and in exception of the first one nothing but outright dropping me. This 2nd interview, about a week after submitting for the job, I was excited to receive an email titled "Congratulations! You got the interview!" I thought wow, what a great way to get your candidates/customers (because remember, we as candidates are customers too) excited. This "interview" turned out to be basically an electronically submitted pre-screening question to which Nike referred to as an essay. They sent me a link to this electronic interview website and told me to follow the instructions. I did. The next evening, I spent hours crafting a well-thought out response to the questions. The recruiters email she first sent said "take this interview and then I will be in touch with next steps. That was about about a month and a half ago. I sent her several "thank you" and "checking on the status" emails, politely asking where things were. I never heard a word back from her or anyone at Nike. Outright and boldly ignored. This seems to generally be how these corporations are "recruiting" in today's world. So either the workload of the recruiters is so unmanageable that their candidate pool is ignored, or, there is just an absolute disregard for candidates, their value and their time. Either way, this is broken and not okay.

      Interview

Applied for the position online, heard back from the recruiter the next day. Scheduled a call which went really well, and recruiter advised that I would hear back in a week or so. Waited 2 weeks and followed up via email - no response. Then 6 weeks later and radio silence - even after the recruiter bragged about how all of the candidates will be told either way whether they will be selected to move forward.

      Application

I interviewed at NIKE (Beaverton, OR) in Sep 2025

      Interview

The role was "Director of Engineering. The interview cycle consisted of three individual interviews, recruiter, principal engineer and recruiting manager, followed by an on-site loop. I went through only the first interview. On the positive side, the interviewer was thorough and professional. He presented all the HR constraints - location of the work, compensation structure - with clarity. INTERVIEW STYLE - That particular interviewer did not ask follow-up questions. For instance, on the question "why applying", I wanted to make it conversational so I started with a very short answer, expecting a follow up. This did not happen, so I missed an opportunity there. This is the only trap I noticed, although it was probably not intentional on the interviewer part. After that, I was mentally making an effort to convert his questions in the format "tell me about a time" so I would explain the context, the outcome and the take away for Nike. ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE - The role of director of engineering seems more of a "senior engineering manager". There might be a bit of title inflation on the management side. That particular role is reporting to a senior director - although I did not ask, I believe there might be two more levels before the CTO. The leadership structure seems very hierarchical, which is surprising given Nike claims to be a matrixed organization. BIAS - On the cons side, it felt like a first date, and not in a good way. The reason I did not get further might have been related to a few gaps in my skill set. Nevertheless, it felt like a ‘good old boy’ dynamic. I could tell in the first minute that the interviewer had made his mind, based on his tone, and shift in friendliness. At that point, the only thing the interviewer could make a judgement on was the "cover of the book", and in my case my accent. This push back against anything "foreign" was further reinforced by the interviewer's response to one of my questions. I wanted to clarify the relationship with India (ITC engineering group / 700 Nike employees in India). The difference of time zone would have been an impediment to good communication. The interviewer downplayed the relevance of my question regarding India. It was not a good feeling, given the spirit of deep autonomy granted to engineering pods at Nike. POTENTIAL - I would have loved working in that group, particularly with the high-profile CTO, and the recent hire of the EVP for Consumer, Production and Innovation.

      Interview

Lengthy process of 8 interviews; which seemed a bit repetitive (ie more to generate buyin on the Nike side than to assess my candidature). The process itself was very well managed by the recruiter in the US. Overall pleasant experience.
