I applied through other source. The process took 4 days. I interviewed at PartnerStack (Toronto, ON) in May 2019
Interview
The whole process took 4 days.
First step was an initial call with an engineering manager who ask me questions about my background and interests.
The day after, I was given a request to come in for a 2 hour interview.
This was definitely one of the more unique interviews I have done. The first hour is a code review where you look at an old pull request and comment on it with 2 other engineers at the company. The second half was an informal discussion where you can ask all your questions about the company and they asked some very easy going questions to me.
The next day I got a call and was informed that I did not get the position and why.
I found it a bit odd that the technical assessment was not very thorough, I guess they wanted to see how I would organically react to the code review. Looking back, I could have been more enthusiastic and talkative. The interview seemed to be more of a cultural fit assessment than a technical assessment. You will need to drive and show off all your personal and technical qualities if you want to do well.
Thank you for taking the time to write and publish this feedback. Feedback is part of our core values and a huge part of what drives us to get better everyday. It’s feedback like yours that helps us improve.
I am really happy we were able to get you a decision in 4 days. Ultimately we want to be as respectful to your time as the process can be. We think 4 days start to finish is pretty good and exceeds our internal benchmark of 7. I also am glad you found our process unique. We really strive to set ourselves apart in the candidates eyes. It sounds like we did that!
You are correct in your assessment that we look for cultural fit over technology fit. We value our amazing culture and at every step of the process our culture is front and centre. Even the technology portion of the interview is %30 culture fit. We believe that because we spend 1/3 of our lives with our co-workers that they should fit into what we value. That sometimes means we have to turn down candidates that would be amazing engineers but may not stack well at PartnerStack.
Thanks again for your feedback.
