I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify (Toronto, ON) in Dec 2020
Interview
15 min initial meeting, followed by a 1 hour " Life Story" and a final step of a 2 hour interview of a reverse life story ( where you, the candidate interview someone at Shopify) and then a technical interview. The process was very fast, after the initial 15 mins meeting.
The whole interview process except for the final meeting is purely a cultural fit assessment. Makes you wonder what place recruiters have in the organization if they are simply assessing people for " culture fit". The team lacked any diversity, everyone was a young, white woman.
The team asked for my references and pushed very hard to move quickly- why do you ask for people's references if you have not hired them? I very much wish I did not provide my references because it gives such a bad message to the people you do provide.
The interviews, lacked any depth or sophistication, at every stage of the interview including the final technical meeting was simply a chat. Very few insights about the business, the role or anything of substance. The process required a lot out of me as a candidate ( booking many meetings, references, filling out info for hardware if I were to get the job ect.). After more thought its for the best an offer was not presented because this team seems very inexperienced and lacked any of the sophistication you would expect from a tech company that is this highly regarded.
Unconventional which seemed Ok at first. The place had a real cult of personality vibe to it. Everyone was nice, but I really did get the sense of a "we are holier than thou feeling".
I applied online. The process took 6 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify in Aug 2024
Interview
The process was unnecessarily long, lacked direction and at times irrelevant. The technical test was essentially a 3 question test on excel functions.
The life story was one of the strangest interviews I have been involved in. The recruiter came off as arrogant and disinterested. At times I felt like they were just gathering information on my previous employers. Judging by some of the comments on their company culture, I'm glad I dodged a bullet.
Zero feedback received too which says it all about their culture.

Question 1
Why do you think you are good enough to work for Shopify?
The process took 5 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify in Jul 2024
Interview
The recruitment process I went through was quite interesting and involved several stages. First, I completed an online test that evaluated my behavioral and logical skills. After that, I had an online meeting with the recruiter. This was followed by another online session specifically designed to test my data skills. Then, there was a life story interview, and the last stage was a reverse life story interview. I received feedback within about 1.5 weeks.
