Anonymous Interview Candidate in Toronto, ON
I interviewed at Shopify (Toronto, ON)
First interview was just a chat with an hr rep. 2nd interview was the gauntlet. I honestly didn’t prepare enough for it, it is a little tricky but if well prepared you will be fine
- How do you empathize with a frustrated customer
Hey there! What type of roles should I be looking for that exist around supporting APIs? I'm looking to make a transition out of customer support, but not sure if/what these type of roles would be classified under. Thanks for your help! Edit to clarify: I mean supporting basic/general API coding/building/functions, likely for different apps or companies that rely heavily on api to work. For ex/ shopify relies on api for their partners apps to work. Does anywhere else do that?

I applied through an employee referral. I interviewed at Shopify
They had me do an assessment where I read questions off a computer and then recorded my answers verbally. Each step in the assessment was timed. It was a little odd and I didn't speak to a real person for the whole process which was disappointing.
- How do you handle failure?

It was a long process (couple of months), with long waiting periods. Overall it was a good experience, unfortunately they went on a hiring freeze as I finished the process. 1. Home Project 2. Videocall screening with HR 3. Technical Interview with a software engineer
- They asked me to walk them through my take home project and describe different challenges I had making it and how I overcame said challenges.

I met with four people from various teams but similar roles, they focused a lot on creative style, idea gathering, testing material, and gauged how scrappy I could be. A lot of Shopify is ambiguous and they want to see how well you can work in that environment
- What would make you an effective creative director, specifically at our company? ... How have you managed freelance creative talent in the past? What qualities does a creative director most need to be successful? How do you measure the success of video?

Two interviews: The first was to get to know you The second was a technical test (provide customer service simultaneously on different channels). I enjoy both interviews although they decided to move into a different direction.
- Tell me a time you went above and beyond

Life story interview for 20 minutes, where you tell your career or life story. This was followed by a mock chat with a client, you can answer the questions using their documentation.
- Tell us about your first job

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify (Vancouver, BC)
Impossible standards with three round of interview and information one was make a store, do so much research, respond to online inquiries and speak with someone on the phone as the owner

I applied online. The process took 2 months. I interviewed at Shopify (Canada, KY)
Had a 4 step interview process with about a week inbetween all of them. The whole process start to finish and receiving an offer toke around two months. But everyone was very pleasant and nice to get to know, it was a great interview vibe.
Hey team, I just got laid off from Shopify, and I'm looking for referrals for things around fraud, risk management, or security analyst roles. Thank you!
I forgot to say, but I have 2.5 years of experience as a Security Analyst. If you have any questions on whether I'd be a good fit for your company, please reach out 😀

Confusing, unprepared interviewer For a senior level tech role surprisingly interviewed by a peer -same level emoloyee from internal audit- finance (non HR round) with no tech knowledge or background exp. Interviewer asked completely irrelevant questions to job profile requirements They had barely been employed in company for couple months themself and seemed to be trying to tank the interview intentionally through certain questions that suggested the company has a toxic work culture, which I haven't heard about the company otherwise. Been through so many job change interviews never seen this before. Always heard great things about this company so was a very unusual experience. Almost seemed the interviewer was insecure of getting a tech-side peer on same level and same team, outperforming them later. Another person I know who interviewed had similar experience with this interviewer. Reputable company like this should maybe have someone senior oversee the process Rather than have same level employees interview potential candidates.
- Unrelated to role. No q of getting an offer as decided to step out voluntarily before next round as 1st one (nonhr) was off as explained earlier.

Interviewed with the Hiring Manager; went well enough to advance and was offered to be considered for 2 additional positions if I was interested. Next stage, Growth interview with Recruiter. It was rescheduled 4 times, always last minute. Only the last two times was an explanation attached, with the last one being "We keep missing each other!". Only after expressing my frustration to the hiring manager did I get my interview. I wish I had not accommodated the Recruiter 4 times and rescheduled and wish I had been the one to withdraw my application for their lack of professionalism and transparency. Was offered zero feedback on my Growth Stage interview. Overall, an awful candidate experience due to the Talent team.
