I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Shopify in Apr 2020
Interview
I was contacted by a recruiter to interview, it took 1.5 months for them to get back to me after I responded to them right away. Once I spoke to the recruiter we were able to schedule the first round of interviews pretty easily.
It was two hours with no break in between (at least 10 mins would have been helpful). The first hour was with a recruiter to go over a "life story" - just talking about your experience and the recruiter asks some questions. Easy enough.
The second hour was a code challenge in coderpad. The prompt was pretty standard for a first-round, nothing too complicated. I was pretty surprised that it wasn't collaborative or set up as a pair-programming exercise like I thought this company did. It was just me talking and solving the problem, which is pretty standard in the industry but I thought Shopify valued collaboration so I honestly was expecting that to be shown in the interview.
They're boasting about growing the company pretty rapidly right now, and I'm getting the impression the strong culture they've built is already being sacrificed as such. Which is common when companies do grow so rapidly, unfortunately.
Overall was a fine interview, but it felt drastically different from when I interviewed with them 5 years ago where it was much more friendly, personable, and collaborative.
They're still probably a nice company to work for, but just something to consider as they do grow.

I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify in Apr 2026
Interview
I recently completed the interview process at Shopify, which spanned about three weeks. The stages included an initial online cognitive assessment and a pair programming round, followed by a virtual onsite featuring a second pair programming session, a technical deep dive, system design, and a "life story" interview.
Overall, it was an excellent experience. The interviewers were professional and highly engaged throughout. I found the technical problems to be very practical, and notably, the use of AI coding tools was encouraged during the pairing sessions. While the system design requirements were quite lengthy, the complexity was manageable as long as you remain calm, think out loud, and clarify expectations early on.
Had an initial recruiter call, very friendly. Then had a life story interview, very friendly casual conversation as well speaking about past work experiences and how it led to where I am. Was scheduled for a 75 mins coding round, but I dropped since I landed another offer
