I applied through a recruiter. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Shopify
Interview
First is a phone screen, followed by the Life Story interview. The Life Story interview has you talk about your life - what got you to where you are now. It's different than other companies because you don't just talk about education or employment history.
After that is the first Pair Programming interview. Its basic data structures type questions in Python. Ask questions and interact with the interviewer - they care as much about your thought process as the solution.
If you pass that first Pair Programming interview, then you go on to another half day of interviews, including another Pair Programming interview, an in depth discussion on 1-3 previous projects, and a case study where you discuss how you would solve a problem.
If you pass all this, they do references and initial verbal offer. All of this is before you are matched to a team or get to talk with anyone you'd be directly working with. It seemed like a cool place to work, and the offer was comparable to my other offers, but I just cant bring myself to accept a job where I don't get to meet who would be my manager or anyone on the team first. The working environment is so important to happiness that knowing if you get on well is critical. All that said, I would consider it in the future and I understand that part of this unique process is due to how fast they are growing.
Interview questions [1]
Question 1
Paired programming working on data related problems.
First round: Case study style SQL questions with python coding and short assessment like an IQ test
Final round: marketplace case study, coding based analysis, life story, and in depth project
Scheduling was very difficult and I had to spend a lot of time following up with the recruiter to move things along. They weren't able to tell me who my manager would be or provide any input on that person. In the end they simply never contacted me back after a final technical round. My impression is they didn't want to offer me a job but were unable to be direct about that-- it was such a bizarre process especially with an established organization.
