      Enterprise Account Executive Interview

      Application

I applied through a recruiter. I interviewed at Smartling (Paris) in Sep 2025

      Interview

The process revealed a lack of respect for candidates’ time and professionalism. I was first asked to prepare a detailed market study for the Nordics. Three days later, this was changed to the French market, and the work already completed was disregarded with no flexibility offered. After receiving an offer, I expected a constructive discussion on aligning expectations. Instead, the Chief Revenue Officer (CRO) behaved in a dismissive and condescending way. Comments such as “I don’t have time for this” and “It’s either this offer or no job” were repeated, with eye-rolling throughout. The overall attitude was not collaborative but patronizing, as if asking questions was inappropriate. A recruitment process, however, is a two-way street: companies are equally “lucky” when strong candidates are genuinely interested in joining. Although the role itself seemed interesting, I declined the offer after this experience. Professionalism and mutual respect are fundamental, and no compensation package can make up for a culture where these are missing. During one of the interviews, the CEO asked me what Smartling should do to succeed in Europe. My answer is clear: leadership must adapt to European standards of professionalism and respect. In Europe — and especially in France — respect is not optional. It is both a legal and a cultural expectation. Processes that waste candidates’ time and C-level executives displaying patronizing behavior will quickly damage reputation and drive strong talent away. Respect and cultural awareness are not “nice to have.” They are essential for long-term success.

Thank you for taking the time to share your experience. We regret that your interaction with us did not meet your expectations and you felt disrespected, that was never our intention. We would like to provide some additional context to ensure a fair and balanced view. Throughout your process, our team made a significant effort to be accommodating — including adjusting timelines around your vacation, extending deadlines, and holding space as you evaluated other opportunities. When you pushed us to make a rushed decision based on your timeline, we made it work and answered all your questions, provided all additional info and shared the opportunities that will open right away and in the future. We understand that compensation discussions can be sensitive, and we always aim to be respectful, transparent, and consistent — including communicating when our final offer was reached. While it's disappointing to see the situation mischaracterized, we remain proud of the professionalism and care our team brings to every candidate interaction. Finally, we fully agree that recruitment is a two-way street. We value candidates who bring thoughtful perspectives and ambition, and we respect the right to ask questions and engage in a meaningful dialogue — even when there are differences in style or expectations. We wish you the best in your future endeavors and thank you again for considering Smartling. -HR team
