I had a virtual meeting with the hiring manager. After a few days, I was asked to come on site. When I arrived, there was confusion on who was participating in the interview panel (consisting of business partners) and what time they were supposed to interview me. I've been there before, so no big deal. The next panel was with my peers. The interview ended with an in-person meeting with the hiring manager. That was a bit odd as they did not ask me any questions, but rather spoke about their experience - which was covered in the previous Zoom interview. I genuinely liked her and figured she had so many interviews recently, that it is hard to keep track of. Afterwards, I got a call from their internal recruiter letting me know they were offering me the role. The salary was SIGNIFICANTLY lower ($20k) than what I shared with her in the initial discussion. I referened that and she said my salary EXPECTATIONS were listed under nice to have. I informed her that it was not a nice to have, but I really liked the group I spoke with and to give me time to consider with my family. She called me back the next day and I asked for a couple more days to review, given it was such a significant decrease from my current compensation. When we next spoke, I asked her a few follow up questions. In the initial phone screen, I let her know of my end of year holiday plans. I asked her to confirm the hiring manager approved this time off and to confirm this time would be paid. There were a couple other minor questions that were more clarifying for me than anything. The recruiter was shocked I had questions and I could tell she was trying to contain her frustration. She said she assumed during our scheduled phone call that I would be giving her a response, not asking more questions. I was shocked! I apologized and let her know I wasn't aware that was her intent as she had never sent me any formal offer letter or any other documentation! She let me know she would get with the hiring manager on my holiday requests. She called me back a couple hours later, told me the holiday time would not be approved nor paid and that they instead decided to rescind the offer. I was honestly relieved as all the information I shared up front initially seemed to be non-issues, later came back as issues. I still really enjoyed the individuals I met and spoke with and would consider joining the team in the future, so long as there is better transparency and communication during the recruitment process and formal documentation around the offer is provided.
