      Online Marketing Intern Interview

      May 25, 2024
      Anonymous Interview Candidate
      Croydon, England
      Declined offer
      Negative experience
      Average interview

      Application

I applied online. The process took 1 day. I interviewed at Watches2U (Croydon, England) in Jul 2020

      Interview

I was interviewed by the COO of the company. It got off to a pretty unwelcome start. As we sat down and waited for another member of staff to join for the interview, the COO (Faisal) sat facing off to the side of me obruptly asking me to confirm details on my CV. Once everyone was in the room the interview officially commenced. Standard stuff to begin with, although the COO decided to ask me about the number of Facebook friends I had and then proceeded to tell me the number I had was rubbish, although he used much stronger language (bit random, and strange - not sure what the logic behind the question was tbh). He also proceeded to tell me my University was rubbish, again, much harsher language was used. He randomly threw in a math question "If I have a box of watches. 8 are black, and 2 are blue, what percentage are black?" A simple question to be fair but the randomness of it gave me pause. I believe Faisal, the COO took that as a lack of understanding the question and proceeded to raise his voice and ask the question again. I answered correctly to which he responded "Good. If you had got that wrong on the job I'd have fired you". In addition to this, he asked if I had interviewed elsewhere before. I naively said yes, and he asked who with to which I again, naively told him. He then looked them up online and proceeded to criticise their website right there and then. The other person conducting the interview, sensing the tension asked me some personal questions to lighten the mood. Such as hobbies, and if I had any pets etc. When I answered about my Dog and told them the breed Faisal interjected with "That's not a Dog, that's a rat" which of course irritated me to the point of biting back at the comment. Somehow, during the process of the interview I impressed them with my knowledge of integrated marketing and was therefore offered the job on my way home from said interview. I of course politely declined due to the completely unprofessional interview and the toxic workplace vibes I got from both the interview and environment in the short period I was in their place of work. Faisal then took it upon himself to call me and abruptly ask "why not?". As a recent graduate and not feeling comfortable sharing my true feelings I just said it didn't feel like the right fit. He then asked "Is it because I'm direct. You seemed like you could handle that" In hindsight I wish I shared my true thoughts, but kept it polite in the hope to quickly end the conversation. Faisal then said there are two people in this world. People who want to make money and people who just want to be happy and that he felt I was the latter. To be fair to him, he did give me some advice on some online learning materials to use to further my skill set which was appreciated. I hope in the years since this interview their process and attitude have changed for the better.
