At the 2023 Leadership Summit in Anaheim, Heart & Soul members came together to present a check to a local organization supporting students in need. What started as a simple call to give inspired an overwhelming response, with members investing in youth from the surrounding community. Their energy reflected something bigger than a donation; it reflected shared purpose. “That moment captured the true spirit of Heart & Soul: collective action, compassion, and the power of coming together to make a real difference,” said Chris Lewis, reflecting on a standout moment from the group. Heart & Soul is our Employee Resource Group (ERG) dedicated to promoting the career growth and retention of staff of African and Caribbean descent while advancing health for all through dialogue, mentorship, professional development, and community outreach. A single internship can open doors you never expected. For Hannah Blackwell, saying yes to that first opportunity sparked a career rooted in purpose, growth, and impact. Hannah began her journey at Heart as a Marketing and Communications intern, completing two internships with a focus on learning, supporting the team, and soaking up everything she could. Over time, those early experiences turned into greater ownership, leadership, and the chance to lead key pieces of work. Seeing how her contributions directly support the mission has made her professional and personal growth meaningful. Drawn in by the American Heart Association’s powerful mission, Hannah found more than a job. When LaSonia Landry received the North Star Employee Award, she didn’t think about titles or tenure—she thought about home. Growing up in a small town in Mississippi, she was raised on simple but powerful lessons: “be a good human, treat everyone with respect, and take pride in what you do.” Those values still guide how she shows up every day at the American Heart Association. The North Star Award is given annually to the colleague who exemplifies strong character and interpersonal excellence. For LaSonia, that recognition hits deeper than any metric could. “When recognition centers on character, it hits a little deeper,” she shared. LaSonia joined Heart 11 years ago after heart disease directly impacted her family. She’s stayed because the work isn’t finished, and because she wants her kids to see what it looks like to show up for something bigger than yourself.
