Description No, the mascot for this school is not an emu. However, through the years Eastern Michigan University (EMU) athletes and students have been called "Normalites," the "Men from Ypsi," and "Hurons" before the nickname "Eagles" was adopted in 1991. EMU has an enrollment of more than 22,000 students (some 85% are Michigan residents) who attend college on its campus in the southeastern part of the state. Its undergraduate and graduate program offerings include arts and sciences, business, education, technology, and health and human services. The university operates continuing education campuses in Brighton, Detroit, Flint, Jackson, Livonia, Monroe, and Traverse City. EMU was founded as a teacher's college in 1849.
