Company Updates

  • Japanese Internet company Rakuten says that it can build a #5G network for just a third of what it would cost using the approach taken by a traditional LTE operator.

The claims made by CTO Tareq Amin at this week’s Digital Transformation World conference in Nice, France, suggest that the company will take a highly disruptive approach when it launches its LTE service in October. http://glassdoor.com/slink.htm?key=vMdgU #TMFDigital #DigitalTransformation

RAKUTEN PEOPLE: Meet Freebody Mensah, Senior Information Security Manager

Tell us something that might surprise us about you?
I really don’t get excited about anything that much anymore unless it’s the NBA finals with Lebron James playing or a new Marvel movie in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Oh, I really love my job too… surprise!

Tell us about your job! What do you do?
My job is to help improve the maturity level of Rakuten information security posture. As part of the Office of CISO (Chief Information Security Officer) & Information Security and Privacy Governance team, we are in the process of growing, improving, and enhancing the information security program for Rakuten Group Companies and its subsidiaries.

What do you love about it?
I love the excitement about building something new, it’s like a startup. We will make mistakes but will learn from it, and we will grow and be better in the end.

What does a typical day look like?
As of now I’m aligning the dominant industry standard frameworks out there and mapping them to RGR (Rakuten General Regulations) to create the right security controls baseline for Rakuten.

What’s been the most challenging thing you’ve worked on?
Well in my past job it was trying to bring all the subsidiaries together under one information security and Governance umbrella at the group level.

Who or what inspires you?
I love being challenged in my work. I love the fact that my boss, Dan Hambali (CISO) is always guiding me to make sure I’m on the right path and giving me good feedback on projects I’m currently working on. Good feedback keeps me going. I love this company I know I have not been here for long, but I like the people and the culture. I like to bring a “help me help you attitude” to my work every day. That is what inspires me.

You probably have a life outside Rakuten; what are you up to when you’re not at work?
My wife keeps me very busy, she has a scholarship program for young African students in Utah, Idaho, and Arizona. We do our best to educate these young African students in public speaking, finance, and how to fit in and succeed in corporate America.

What are your hobbies?
I like to watch LeBron James Play Basketball, I love Netflix originals, I sometimes paint on my iPad, and I play basketball like once every six months when I can get away from the kids… I love my kids don’t get me wrong.

What advice do you have for someone interested in joining Rakuten?
Don’t think about it just join. Rakuten is a very diverse company. It is the only company so far that I have worked for that provides excellent benefits to their employees in almost all aspect of life (good food, awesome health benefits, good work environment, value oriented company culture, sports clubs, book clubs, movie clubs and many more….) and I love it.

    Application

I applied online. The process took 2 weeks. I interviewed at Rakuten (San Mateo, CA) in November 2018.

    Interview

Quick, thorough, smooth, and engaging. Lead recruiter Lisa Martin conducted a great phone screen, which quickly led to an on-site interview coordinated by Shannon Panec. The interview went well - composed of professionals in the HR field which lasted 2 hours, including an on-site excel reporting and written assignment. Both Lisa and Shannon never skipped a beat and kept in touch during the process. Joined the company two weeks later and have been enjoying it since!
