The Appalachian Mountains are known for their ruggedness; for those intrepid hikers who take a fall, Pikeville Medical Center (PMC) is there to help. PMC serves patients in eastern Kentucky with about 260 beds and 200 doctors providing a full range of inpatient, outpatient, and surgical services. PMC also operates a family practice clinic (through which it offers a family practice residency program) and a rehabilitation hospital. Its Pikeville Medical Development Corporation (PMDC) works to attract businesses to the area and foster collaborations between the hospital and the Pikeville College School of Osteopathic Medicine. PMC first opened on Christmas Day in 1924.
