The University of Vermont goes by UVM, which stands for the Latin phrase Universitas Viridis Montis, or University of the Green Mountains. It offers 100 undergraduate majors as well as more than 50 master's programs and 20 doctoral programs. UVM has an enrollment of more than 10,000 undergraduates, some 1,500 graduate students, and more than 450 medical students. A public land grant university, UVM draws about 8% of its budget from the state of Vermont. Notable alumni include education philospher John Dewey and film producer Jon Kilik. Ira Allen founded the university in 1791, the same year that Vermont became the 14th state.
