It has exploration and production activities primarily in the UK North Sea (which account for more than half of Nexen's total annual oil and gas revenues), the US Gulf of Mexico, western Canada (including unconventional natural gas resource plays such as coalbed methane and shale gas, and the Athabasca oil sands of Alberta), Yemen, offshore West Africa, and Colombia.
