To work to eliminate ageism and ensure the dignity and quality-of-life of New York City’s diverse older adults, and for the support of their caregivers through service, advocacy, and education.
Strategic Goals
To foster independence and individual choices, confront ageism and promote opportunities for older people to share their leadership, knowledge and skills. To inform and educate the general public about aging issues, including services, supports and opportunities for older New Yorkers and their families. To be a catalyst for increased resources to enhance and expand programs and services for older New Yorkers. To ensure the provision of quality services fairly and equitably to older New Yorkers. To enhance and expand effective, productive partnerships with consumers, advocates, private and public organizations. To recognize the value of all staff and encourage their creativity in building the Department's capacity for continuous improvement.
Description New York City is home to approximately 1.64 million older adults, and the Department for the Aging is committed to helping them age in their homes and communities. Our mission is to eliminate ageism and ensure the dignity and quality of life of diverse older adults. We also work to support caregivers through service, advocacy, and education.
We accomplish these goals by partnering with hundreds of community-based organizations to provide services through older adult centers, naturally occurring retirement communities, case-management and home-care agencies, home-delivered meal programs, mental health and friendly visiting programs, and much more in each borough.
NYC Aging also has an Older Adult Employment Services Unit, Caregiver Resource Center, Elderly Crime Victims Resource Center, Grandparent Resource Center, Foster Grandparent Program, Bill Payer Program, and Volunteer Resource Center.
We are committed to providing safe and inclusive services for diverse, older New Yorkers. All New Yorkers, regardless of immigration status, can access NYC Aging and City services. We know that older adults may have concerns about the confidentiality of their information, especially any information about their immigration status. The City has strong policies to protect the privacy of your information. You can find more information through the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs. Additionally, if you are worried or have questions about immigration and public benefits for you or your loved ones, you can visit nyc.gov/publiccharge for more information.
As we look to the future, when older adults are projected to reach 1.86 million - or 20.6 percent - of the City's population by 2040, we are proud to participate in Age-friendly NYC: New Commitments for a City for All Ages under Mayor Eric Adams’ leadership. Our City has already been named an age-friendly city by the World Health Organization. The Age-friendly NYC: New Commitments initiative and our work with community partners make it even better!
Public service is a noble calling: to help others, to make our communities stronger, and to uphold the public trust. As city employees, we see the results of our hard work in our own community— in street and infrastructure improvements, new buildings rising from the ground, safer and more prosperous neighborhoods, and happier, healthier children, families, and senior citizens. We may all come from different backgrounds, but we are connected through our passion for service.
What we do at work today, and everyday, shapes the Boston of tomorrow.
