I have been working at APHSA full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Great flexibility with caring folks.

    Cons

Non-profit membership association with challenged resources which makes the workload heavy at times.

    Pros

I had the opportunity to work with experts in the field and learn from the state health and human service directors, APHSA membership, which was invaluable. The work I had was amazing.

    Cons

APHSA has faced tremendous reduction in it's membership and are heavily based on membership dues. The organization has restructured the staff, vision, mission and has downsized. While I was there, many of my colleagues turned over to other companies. They don't have capacity to hire and some affiliates don't have much work.

    Negative Outlook

    I worked at APHSA part-time

    Pros

Employees are committed to children and families and the association is commited to human service policy improvement. There are multiple, varied opportunities to learn federal policy and state practice.

    Cons

Extremely hierarchical and top heavy. Management left little room for initiative or creativity in staff. No room or support for growth and advancement.

    Advice to Management

Support and encourage your staff. Protect and reward intelligence and initiative. Eliminate the excessive hierarchy and the message it gives.

    Recommends

    Pros

Emerging strategy that focuses on innovative solutions
Excellent work-life balance policies and culture
    Thoughtful, supportive, and smart co-workers
Opportunity to serve a cause and work with interesting members and partners

    Cons

Supervision and management skills are uneven
The association is often battling with its financial limitations
A sometimes state-centric, program-centric mindset interferes with the strategy of innovation

    Advice to Management

Continue on the current path of formulating and implementing strategy, and back it up with a more focused effort on developing the management and supervisory skills of everyone in those roles. Continue to upgrade the staff, as the association went through a period of low performance accountability (this has now changed).
