I worked at Alares Engineering full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

I worked at Alares Engineering for 3 years. I liked the work because it was diversified and meaningful. The main mission of the company is to help improve the lives of veterans through design services. the company is growing in all areas of design. they recently won a major contract to provide design services for all federal and state buildings in New England. I would have stayed at Alares but my wife got a great...

I worked at Alares Engineering full-time

    Pros

    Good pay. Lots of travel.

    Cons

Owner is a SUPER-micromanager! The worst boss on Earth. Constant back stabbing among employees, especially if they didn't negotiate a good salary and are jealous. CAUSTIC environment - if you work here you WILL go to the doctor more for stomach problems!!!! Owner steals his employees hotel points for ALL travel, to use for his family's vacations. This is standard in the industry to allow hotel points to be had by...

    Advice to Management

Stop creating such a negative work environment. Stop stealing the hotel points from your employees. This is DUE to them for giving up their lives for weeks and months per year for YOUR company and benefit.

    Alares Engineering Response

    August 5, 2019HR Manager

This review is completely false and inaccurate. Company policy has always allowed employees to keep hotel and air miles as a benefit. Also employees work no more than 40 hours a week which has always been the standard. And the owner does not write the reports. He does not ...

I have been working at Alares Engineering full-time

    Pros

Because its a small company there is an opportunity to get experience in several different areas of the business. The owner puts a lot of trust with the employees. Meaningful work helping out with other veterans. If you like to travel there is plenty of opportunities to travel. Love having half day Fridays in the Summer.

    Cons

A couple employees with poor performance feel they were unfairly let go. Those are the bad reviews on this site. Believe me, they did not deserve to work at this company. Only top performing, professional people work here. Each and every employees contribution is important to the success of other employees and the company.

    Advice to Management

Continue to appreciate that everyone is involved in all aspects of the business and only hire top performers. The non performers affect everyone.

    Pros

In the summer you get to leave at 3pm on Fridays

    Cons

The owner has driven out the entire executive team over the past year They only really do work with one client (the VA), and ther reputation with them is terrible dur to constant turnover and owner mismangement There is no room for advancement. There is one client and all of their decision makers dislike the owner. Work is drying up. The owner is actively crushing people's souls

    Advice to Management

There is no managment left. Just the owner #Sad #retire

I worked at Alares Engineering full-time

    Pros

The owner may be willing to overpay new employees to plug the holes in the sinking ship. Also may be a good time to ask for a raise if you are a current employee because he can't afford to lose anyone else.

    Cons

Expectations are high, but don't expect any training or support... or working computers for that matter The owner is never wrong, especially when he is wrong Clients think they are a joke Company will likely be closed within two years. Have not won a construction project in the past 2 years

    Advice to Management

Quit Construction. Learn how to become a leader that people will follow. Stop being selfish, arbitrary and mean spirited.

Travelling around USA to veteran hospitals Meeting energy engineers Learning about renewable and energy efficiency Using BAS and TSI on job site It is a job so can't complain too much

    Cons

Writing 5 reports about sensors out of calibration, they don't get calibrated Not good professional and career development All reports and no project engineering Learning in the first few months, then repeating the same report Very high turn over No local work, we had to fly to the veteran hospital sites Benefits not good, using old laptops and your own cell phone

    Advice to Management

    Invest more in employees

I worked at Alares Engineering for less than a year

    Pros

Some Pros you will benefit from working at Alares: - Use of Procore Technology software. this is A++++ and not found at many companies. - Large enough to get a $10M project completed, yet small enough to care about all their employees. - They foster a Vertical growth environment, but allow their employees to steer there own path to success. - You'll always be a name to the company and not just a number. -...

    Cons

They deal with strictly Federal work and more specifically VA hospitals. They certainly can deliver in that arena, but are hesitant to reach out and compete on typical public/private projects as of course profit margins are slim. Keep in mind this is a veteran based company and with that comes its Pros & Cons like any company in the construction industry.

    Advice to Management

    Keep doing what you're doing.

I have been working at Alares Engineering

    Pros

There have been some key hires recently that have been encouraging due to the potential for growth in the short term. This also presented a great chance to learn under some experienced professionals. At the same time, there are members of the team that have been here for 4+ years, and the standards and procedures they have developed set a great precedent for work moving forward. Good compensation and benefits.

    Cons

The work can be demanding, and the hours can be long. There has been some social activity, however, it's relatively limited.

    Advice to Management

Team building should be encouraged at a personal level as well as a professional level. The work is rewarding and experience is useful, but there is not much office culture.
