Miserable culture, unbearable leadership

Pros

Few pros here -- fair amount of responsibility delegated to analysts, employees passionate about fundamental research, nice office with amenities.

Cons

Don't let the recent flood of positive reviews fool you; employees were clearly asked to counter to negative comments from before. Alger maintains the most unhappy, negative culture I've ever come across. Specific cons include: rigid hierarchy, unnecessary assignments for the sake of useless fundamental research, incredibly arrogant and snobby senior management, a nonexistent culture, and an attitude of despair felt by almost all employees. There are many other great shops -- and other jobs -- with more positive work environments and more driven employees. Do not fall into the Alger trap. Senior management is intelligent but not leadership material, failing to inspire employees and instead fostering an atmosphere of resentment. Calling Alger a company with culture is an overstatement. It is more a collection of isolated individuals who like to invest, but with no interest in creating an enjoyable work place. Talented junior employees should especially not waste their time at Alger -- there are so many better jobs and leadership teams out there. Only those who are obsessed with fundamental research and investing should consider a position here. If you are looking for a positive culture or decency, look elsewhere.

Pros

If you take a position at Alger, you will quickly develop tight, long-lasting friendships with colleagues who also suffer in the prison-camp like environment. In addition, almost all alums succeed elsewhere due to their strong work ethic so Alger has a good reputation to hire from. Finally, you will enjoy the free snacks and beverages. My recommendation is that if you are just starting out, take advantage but leave before you reach the end of 2 years. If you are experienced, do not go here unless you don't have any other choice and can get out within a year.

Cons

There are honestly too many to list... the highlights are: 1) you will develop Stockholm Syndrome - Management offers just enough perks/parties/trips to think it is not that bad especially given long-term goals but these objectives are never reached because management lies a LOT - there is no investment process so it is definitely not analyst driven; 2) management is arrogant and condescending, they won't listen to you and will make up information to support their case, especially as it relates to comp or advancement; 3) comp is based on relationships and what sector you cover rather than actual performance - deferred comp uses complex formula that should be viewed as 10-25% of original grant; and 4) the office space seems great until you realize you are a zoo animal or prisoner in your glass-walled office with concrete floors.

Do yourself a favor, find another job

Pros

You gain a lot of experience and exposure to smaller clients. Lots of opportunity to gain retail sales experience.

Cons

Lots of people get away with doing absolutely nothing at the company and get paid way too much to do so. Leadership is absolutely 100% ignorant and doesn’t understand how to do this properly. Everything is a fire drill and sales goals are driven by the whims of people who don’t accept reality of the markets or what clients really want. No one is willing to take blame when things go wrong, which they always do. Employees dread going to work and become increasingly more depressed as they continue working for the firm. Many long time employee have no other options and are stuck at the firm for various reasons. Couldn’t recommend working for Alger less—eventually you get to a point where you feel like you’ve lost yourself and your soul, you have low morale, and you begin dreaming about the day you can quit. Bonus structure is also completely skewed towards people with larger territories and is dependent upon your wholesaler’s ability to perform their job, so if you get stuck with an underperformer you are out of luck.
