I worked at Altec Lansing full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Altec Lansing was a great place to work in terms of people, location and work life balance

    Cons

Ownership- the owner Ross Gatlin was very shady and didn't appreciate his employees

    Advice to Management

The guys at the top need to understand that the workers are important to their success. Felt used and abused in the short 11 months I was there.

    Pros

Good benefits and great team to work with.

    Cons

Bought out by larger company and pleasant working atmosphere went away. No room for growth.

    Advice to Management

    Do not micromanage so much.

I worked at Altec Lansing full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I have worked with some of the nicest, most talented people at Altec. The engineers were brilliant and really created beautiful sound.

    Cons

The company changed hands several times and unfortunately the current owners of the company killed it. Altec is dying and will never be the same. I worked at Altec for almost 5 years and I've been through at least 5 or 6 rounds of layoffs. The owners were great at lying straight to your face and really treated people like crap.

    Advice to Management

Go out of business, you suck and don't know how to run a company. You killed a beautfiul thing.

    Pros

Challenging speaker designs that sound great are because of inter-department cooperation. The people in engineering are proud of what they design and the quality of the product shows it.

    Cons

Altec management think the products can be designed by Chinese factories and get the same results. This in my opinion is the down fall of the company.

    Advice to Management

This is an audio product. The sound quality should be put first above all else. You need to design speakers that sound good not speakers that LOOK like they sound good.

    Pros

Altec Lansing has a great heritage in the music industry. The company embraces new ideas and encourages creativity. Senior Management is accessable and treats everyone with respect.

    Cons

The company is very indecisive with direction. Messages are either unclear or just not communicated. There is a huge disconnect amongst the various departments - basically, the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing. Salaries are low and promotions are far and few between.

    Advice to Management

Get back to innovation and celebrate the heritage! You have to lead instead of follow.

    Pros

People are smart, kind, and human to each other. Lots of friendships inside the company. Vicki is a very genuine, nice person and fun to work for.

    Cons

Decisions are unclear, often reversed, with the end result a sense of chaos. Hard to feel you are trusted to move forward without senior management's blessing. Too much micro-management in many departments.

    Advice to Management

Give us a clear strategy and then get out of the way so we can execute it.

    Pros

Colleagues are good people and care about their work. Everyone gets along fairly well. It is a good opportunity in an area which does not have much industry at all. Location is in a beautiful area.

    Cons

There is much madness with no method. Communication is terrible. Especially from upper management. Many agendas. People do 180's depending on who is listening and nothing ever is finished. Lower managers have no ability to take ownership.

    Advice to Management

Allow your people to take ownership and be proactive. People say you can but it is far from the truth. Have trust in employees and their ideas or else there is nothing new in a crowded industry.
