I have been working at BCLC full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Cons

At times the expectations of other divisions are unrealistic and not aligned with the capability or capacity of the requested division.

    Pros

Good job security, well known company looks good on the resume, decent benefits and lots of time off. Interesting industry to be in.

    Cons

LOTS of red tape and policy. Nothing happens quickly here and working with technology can be frustrating due to how old it is sometimes. Room for advancement is slim.

    Advice to Management

Allow more freedom when it comes to spending and creation of jobs.

I have been working at BCLC part-time

    Pros

    - free coffee
    - good breakfasts
    - good benefits
    - some paid training
    - good people

    Cons

    - too much middle management
    - no FTE positions for people who have been there 5+ years
    - useless people who make way too much money
    - lack of cohesiveness; too many people trying to make decisions and attend meetings where it should start with the front line and work it's way up
    - out of date technology
    - too many contractors
    - "ghost" positions where you don't know what someone does who make $100k/year
    - lack of recognition
    - always hiring "senior" roles
    - promoting people who are not qualified
    - no recognition or bonuses for those who work outside regular business hours
    - lack of direction and innovation, and rolling out products without having internal users as beta testers
    - top heavy people managers
    - Kamloops head office old and falling apart
    - top heavy on "people managers"
    - no options to work although alot of IT positions can be worked from home
    - always hiring externally instead of promoting internally
    - seniority does not count for anything

    Advice to Management

Ask yourselves why the morale is low.

    Cons

No opportunity to work from home. No fitness allowance or transit subsidy. No employee bonuses and very small merit increases.

"Overall a good organization and is trying to get better"

    Pros

People are generally friendly and want to get things done (but that doesn't apply for everyone). There is now a push for greater innovation which is a good sign. There is an underlying societal good that comes from the money made at BCLC. Most people have good intentions and are trying to do the right thing.

The facilities in Vancouver are comfortable. There is a certain level of autonomy for a number of positions that can lead to a certain level of job satisfaction.

The business itself is interesting and complex.

They have a good learning development program (but it can also depend on how supportive your Manager is).

    Cons

Like all government organizations, there is a certain level of bureaucracy and slowness that impedes growth. Sometimes it can't be helped given the provincial government is a key stakeholder and this organization is always subject to public scrutiny. Perhaps more money could be made for the government if the reigns on BCLC were further loosened (though that is unlikely to happen)

There is also an underlying divide between head office and Vancouver. Also the salaries in some cases have not kept pace with the rate of inflation and the cost of living in Vancouver. I don't think that is as much the case for Kamloops given the cost of living is not quite so high.

Pace can be a bit slow/frustrating for some people.

    Advice to Management

Keep innovation happening. Make sure messages coming from the top carry through all levels of management. Don't be afraid to promote smart people.

I worked at BCLC full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexible hours. Some interesting projects. Some good people to work with.

    Cons

To much power in the hands of Directors. People with real expertise are not given true opportunity to influence. They talk about inclusions, innovation, opportunity to make a real difference - the walk is entirely different. CIO is a joke.

    Advice to Management

Stop using the formal chain of command so much when considering options.
