I worked at Biogen full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Biogen cares about their employees. They treat you with respect. They have social hour which gives you the chance to meet and mingle with other workmates after work

    Cons

Lot of lay offs. This can't be avoided. That's the only issue I had with Biogen

Employees dedicated to improving human health, brilliant scientists, great work-life balance, recognition of performance

    Cons

The culture, it's all about who you know and not what you know - that's what gets you ahead.

    Pros

Good pay, Great benefits (summer hours, eoy shutdown, unlimited sick, LTI, Bonus)

    Cons

Biogen likes to boast that it is on the forefront of diversity and inclusion. That might be true when it comes to white women, but it is not the case for Blacks and Latinos. Hiring and promotions for Blacks and Latinos are practically non-existent. When one is hired, s/he is brought in at a lower level than his/her peers and usually stays at that level for eternity, even though the education and experience usually exceeds their peers.

Promotions are practically non-existent. Boston and Cambridge are notoriously bad for promoting Blacks and Latinos. Due to their liberal image, they don't want to be accused of "Affirmative Action", so the standards are so high for Blacks and Latinos, they are unattainable in most cases. White men and women? They do just fine and will be promoted on a normal or accelerated schedule. There are many former Administrative Assistants (usually blonde) who have been put in much higher positions entry-level than most Blacks or Latinos. In fact, the unspoken secret at Biogen is that the lower job levels (1-6) are for Blacks and Latinos. And they stay there for their entire careers.

HR, PO&T, R&D, Finance, Corporate Affairs, Legal, Compliance, have no Blacks in Leadership positions of VP or above. There are a couple Latinos. In fact the finance department doesn't seem to have any Blacks and maybe a few Latinos. Except for R&D, there are not even any Directors in those departments. They claim they can't find any "qualified" applicants. What other company doesn't have a Black person in a leadership position in HR?? The HR department JUST started hiring Blacks. How is that the "forefront" of D&I. Biogen is getting its butt kicked by the other Biotechs in this area.

If you are Black or Latino and are thinking of working here, negotiate the highest level you can, because you'll have that title for a long time, probably your entire Biogen career.

    Advice to Management

People are leaving in droves. Instead of wishing the white people to return, why not reward all the Blacks and Latinos who have been loyal to the company? Why not take a chance and promote some? Stop thinking the problem is a lack of Black and Latino talent by promoting the ones you have now. A bird in the hand beats two in the bush.

I have been working at Biogen full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Work life balance is ok (for now) but resources stretched because people are not being utilized effectively and not replaced when they leave. Benefits are ok.

    Cons

Where to start..lack of vision, toxic work environment, Come here if you NEED a job. Don’t come here if you want to actually grow your career...doesn’t happen for the majority and definitely not in PO&T ...Sr. Management doesn’t think that competitive salaries are necessary to attract and retain talent so raises last year were 2% max.

    Advice to Management

How can you advise management that doesn’t listen?

I have been working at Biogen full-time

    Pros

    Exciting pipeline with high potential
    Opportunities to learn new skills
    Good work/life balance

    Cons

Little emphasis on science, too much on business processes and efficiency
    Difficult to advance in career
    High attrition rates

    Advice to Management

Technical Development in Biogen used to be a great place for a talented scientist or engineer to work, as we focused our efforts to become leaders in biologics manufacturing. We achieved that goal, although unfortunately most of those scientists/engineers are now long gone. The new organization values cost savings and streamlined business processes above all else. Science is simply a means to an end. The diversification of modalities within PO&T means less emphasis on biologics where we had been strongest, and instead spread resources across different modalities and starting to build new expertise from scratch. It's difficult for the scientist to feel valued here, and to make things more difficult the advancement to higher levels has become much more constrained across the organization (again to save costs). My advice would be to recognize the low morale and high attrition issue within PO&T, and try to do something about it - one way is to make science important again.
