I have been working at Bird Technologies full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

The company has mechanisms in place to fast track great product ideas quickly, thereby leaving its competition to play catch-up.
Product management is managed with state-of-the-art tools to maximize profit and ROI.
Executives really care about the employees and provide an empowering atmosphere.
Companywide gainshare checks twice per year with no waiting period after being hired.
Fully vested in 401K plan on date of hire.
Cross-training available to employees that want a change in work duties.
A generous college tuition assistance program.
Continuing education is highly encouraged. If you are not leaning something new all you have to do is find a class/seminar you want to attend and management will approve the opportunity for you to continue your education.
Cutting-edge technology is invested in if approved in the yearly capital approval process.

    Cons

Get even better at listening to Bird's customers for new product opportunities. Sales can be more proactive at lead generation and conversion. Sales could use a course in how to effectively leverage social media to nurture existing and attract new customers.

    Advice to Management

New goal: Identify and encourage specific training that will benefit each individual employee the manager is responsible for. This could be incorporated into their performance review.

    Pros

Laid back because no one is held accountable for anything.

    Cons

About 20 production personnel that are worked like dogs because they can't hire enough people to cover the work that needs to be done.

    Pros

    employees on floor very friendly

    Cons

Need new ideas to be accepted

    Advice to Management

Need to view chosen few old school type manager/employee. Do not want to change for the better. Could not bring new ideas to fruition they would not accept. Very clicky with chosen few.

    Pros

People - Great long term employee base

    Cons

Slow to change, innovation lacking. Not a challenging place to work.

    Advice to Management

Shake things up. Stop relying on the past successful products, cut your losses with bad acquitions

I worked at Bird Technologies full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

They cross train you in different dept. (if you are willing and able). The work is easy, and the employees are willing to work with each other.

    Cons

The pay scale is a little on the low end. Unless you were hired during the TXRX era. It takes a while to get up to where you feel you aren't working for free.

    Advice to Management

Pay your employees what they are worth. Not what you think they are worth. You need to do a reasonable job study to find out the ACCURATE amount...

    Cons

    Management structure is ridgid.
Hard to communicate ideas up the chain.
    Need more rapid prototyping/development

I have been working at Bird Technologies full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Friendly staff and management
Good management for the tasks at hand
    Decent pay and profit-sharing.

    Cons

Complete lack of developing talent. They take you in at your current level and don't think to push you to your potential.
Don't take advantage of existing potential. I worked an entire year on maintaining code that someone with much less education and at a lower pay grade could have easily done.
Pretty inflexible towards alternative schedules such as 4 10 hour days or 9 hour days with every other Friday off even when working solo on a project.
Only 2 weeks of vacation and no sick leave or personal time off. This would be much more easily forgiven if they were flexible on work schedule.
No overtime or comp time benefit for salary employees.

    Advice to Management

Be more flexible with schedule or at least offer some personal time off. Come up with a comp time system. Working long hours to meet a deadline should be rewarded in some way.

I have been working at Bird Technologies full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Private company so when there is gain share checks they are nice. Flexible with time off. Most of the managers are exceptional. It sure is nice that the whole manufacturing plant has HVAC.

    Cons

Average salaries. Most of the cons you'd probably find at any work place. Stuff like it's sometimes too hot or too cold.

    Advice to Management

Recognize employees for the behavior you'd like to see.

I have been working at Bird Technologies full-time

    Pros

Treat employees ok. Longevity, Bird has been in Solon for ever. There seems to be very little accountability which makes Bird a very average company. It is very unlikely you would be fired for performing average.

    Cons

The company lacks a clear strong vision and there are very few new products (or this is just not communicated well). If you were investing, the return on this investment would seem to be small. Future growth is through acquisitions, but recent acquisitions are struggling. Recent layoffs and cuts in benefits (summer hours) and small gain share payouts have reduced the loyalty to the company.

    Advice to Management

It may be time to reduce overhead! Some of the recent acquisitions seem to be struggling and are having an impact on the gain share payouts. Where are the new products? Why is engineering working so much on products for a division who is not making money? Do we really need that many people in Marketing? President seems to travel a lot, and bring back photos of his trips to show people at the round table meetings.
