I worked at Builders FirstSource full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Was a great organization with a thriving culture under Probuild.

    Cons

Started out as Probuild and was bought out by Builders First Source. The culture under Probuild was transparent, however when the conversion process started no one knew what direction the company was taking. Meetings on top of meetings and loyal employees started leaving due to changes in ERP system going from Oracle to caveman times using a Data base system created in house by someone who has upper management by the balls since hes the product owner. Not good business accumen for a company of this size.

    Advice to Management

When going backwards in Systems, ERP's etc. it stagnates the organization from being innovative and competitive. Making changes to business processes and rules without consulting SME's, job title changes without integrity, moving employees from floor to floor and back again, totally shows unorganization from the top!

I have been working at Builders FirstSource full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The regular customers and several of the employees make the job tolerable.

    Cons

The cashier supervisor is loud, and extremely unprofessional. She regales everyone with a daily update on her bowel habits and how long she spent on the toilet with the "poops". She is very loud , when she's at work her voice can be heard throughout the store. She will call out her cashiers in front of customers for talking when she is in fact doing the same thing, she allows some of the cashiers to take longer breaks, use cell phones and leave their post without any repercussions but others are chastised for the same things. If anything is said to the assistant manager or manager the complainant is made to feel like he/she is in the wrong or not being a team player. Some employees are allowed to leave early without any notice but others can ask to be off early in advance and be told no by this supervisor. There have been instances where someone has been told to apply for an open position and then the position is never opened for them to apply, or they are told they can't let them leave their current position.

    Advice to Management

Completely replace management and supervisors in this store and bring in new people from outside. Replace the entire phone and computer system to bring the store into the 2000's and do a better job of stocking materials.

    Pros

good benefits, plenty of communication, well positioned financially

    Cons

not designed for custom builders, well suited for production builders

    Advice to Management

decide if you ACTUALLY want to pursue custom builders. if you REALLY want to go after that market, make a real investment in the personnel needed. don't just hire a salesman and blame him when he doesn't make it... :)
