great people, nice office but sooo much politics
Dec 27, 2021 - Development Impact TeamRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Overall, colleagues are kind, intelligent, driven, good to work with. In theory there is also the chance to work on lots of interesting issues.
Cons
The organisation has grown very quickly over past 5 or so years but the structure has remained the same. As a result there are loads of people who are not happy with their roles/ level of seniority etc. There are people (who are actually really good at their jobs) who have seen their level of responsibility fall as their level of experience has increased. This problem is made worse by a tendency to recruit in at the very senior levels and recruit people with too much experience for junior/ mid level roles. The end result is that loads of the staff are unhappy about their level of recognition/ seniority/ promotion prospects. Which leads to quite a bit of office politics.

Could be so much better....
May 23, 2021 - Manager in London, EnglandRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Amazing colleagues, everyone who joins CDC has a genuine desire to make the world better (at least in the support teams and investment teams) Very interesting work and investment opportunities A great place to get into impact investment, but not a place to build a career or stay longer
Cons
Innovative thinking not encouraged, Ambition is viewed as threatening by senior management and people are incentivised to stay down and don't speak up Serious problem with diversity and inclusion, make big public speeches about gender and being a good workplace for diverse candidates when this is not the reality and day to day the same type of favoritism, old boys network and poor people management as in any other organisation with mediocre management. Organisation has a serious identity crisis between delivering impact and delivering investments, this is often seen as two opposing forces instead of private equity being an instrument for economic growth.... Very poor leadership in the Impact Group Poor people management throughout and many great employees have been burned and left discouraged. Harassment is brushed under the carpet

Pros
Some very smart investment professionals to learn from and work with, and overall, colleagues are driven to address big development challenges across emerging markets and in specific industries. There is potential to be the leading frontier market investor and a pioneer in the ESG private markets space.
Cons
Current leadership is not fit for purpose, and the CEO is responsible for a broken culture and muddled investment strategy. Factors like a poorly designed strategy, lack of empowerment for junior staff, bad working environment within impact team, underdeveloped middle and back office, are contributing to a poor culture, weakening the brand, and mitigating career opportunities.
- Current Employee, more than 8 years★★★★★
Pros
Development impact Emerging markets investments Complex transactions Climate change
Cons
Pay lower than market State owned
- Former Employee, more than 1 year★★★★★
Pros
- Work Life Balance - Ability to develop an expertise in EM and FM - Culture: friendly, no pressure, travels
Cons
- Culture: political and bureaucratic - Low Pay - Little importance of technical skills
