I have been working at CalAtlantic full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

INITIAL TRAINING WAS GREAT! Feel of the place felt good...The processes are very thought out. I felt well prepared when I first started. I've worked here 6 months.

    Cons

Management . They only assist those favored. Management is biased. They give a "better than us" feel to the environment. Creates an discomfort with them only. The employees and support staff minus the managers are friendly.

    Advice to Management

Stop playing favorites... Make the weaker employees stronger. Have a good relationship with all your staff members , not just other managers.

I have been working at CalAtlantic full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Raise after a month.

    Cons

    Poor management.
    Poor hiring/vetting.
    Poor discipline practices.
    Poor scheduling practices.
    Working on holidays/weekends/nights.
    Sleazy people in management positions.
VERY HIGH TURNOVER RATE! (3 employees gone in a week!)

    Advice to Management

Actually try to keep your employees around. Not many people want to work all night and all holidays. Keep what you can get. If I could give zero stars, I would. Or negative stars. That would be better. If one can find a better job than this, one should do so.

I worked at CalAtlantic full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Health benefits were adequate for what it’s worth.

    Cons

All departments are disconnected, horrible communication. No concern or regard for customers, they are seen as a dollar sign only. No formal training.

    Advice to Management

Before the merge, the emphasis was on building a quality product. Now the emphasis is on mass production with terrible construction quality.

I worked at CalAtlantic full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The work we did with the builder and clients was very rewarding. A large amount of the team operated as a strong family (mostly builder side of the business, not mortgage)

    Cons

Mortgage management and executives are out of touch with reality and the business we were put in place to support. All they care about are Gross margins. We were beat over the head with that term repeatedly yet also told we, as employees, didn't deserve to make the pay we earned pre-merger. CalAtlanic Mortgage destroyed the best builder mortgage company in the US, Standard Pacific Mortgage when the merger (aka takeover) by Ryland occurred. Ryland's /CalAtlantic's methodology is to pay terrible wages for the work performed which is why they can only retain people that care little for the work they perform or the customers they support. They tarnish the reputations of those that hold high regard for their work by failing to hire support staff which can perform at a high level of excellence. Management then fails to hold those accountable and makes excuses. They continue to implement new processes that only hurt the customer and process and costs the company business, effectively wasting the time of the sales agents trying to bring the business in the door. This is not a 9-5 industry yet most managers are unavailable after 5pm when we need their help, again costing us business. Loan officers pay is largely tied to customer service yet those ratings are impacted by other staff in the process who care little for customer service and are not held accountable. Processes are implemented but not followed. Large amount of underwriters don't know basic guidelines and are not empowered to think of solutions. One hostile underwriter has a God complex and treats teammates like garbage. Many seem to lack critical thinking and problem solving skills. Promotions mostly come from the Ryland side of the business and many of those didn't deserve the promotions as they failed in their original roles in many ways. Ryland loan officers were all made branch managers with the merger with zero regard for the Standard Pacific employees that were far more experienced and deserving of the positions. It was basically the Ryland way or the highway and the Ryland way was a failure pre-merger and continues to be a big failure as CalAtlantic Mortgage. Work life balance was non-existent. Vacations for the top employees couldn't be taken because there was no one reputable to cover an absence.

    Advice to Management

Fire most of them from the CEO on down. Invest in your team and your business will be a success.

    I worked at CalAtlantic full-time

    Pros

    -Great people
    -Offer Health Benefits
    -Give good raises
Overall I enjoyed working for CalAtlantic, each department had good managers that would treat their people well.

    Cons

Could sometimes feel like there is the "In" circle and you are either in or out. There was the often a lack of communication between departments which would cause issues and lead to finger pointing rather solving the root problem.

    Advice to Management

Develop better process and procedures so all departments are on the same page.
