Horrible team building a great product

Pros

Remote flexibility, cool product to work on, $750 WFH Stipend and $100/month gym/wifi reimbursement

Cons

Recently, many people have been leaving the company. One reason being quiet layoffs that happen out of nowhere, and now you’re left with taking over that person’s workload with no help. Another reason is people are sick of dealing with the company’s incompetent nature and leadership’s lack of true leadership skills, so even the ones that have built out this startup from the start are leaving (that’s when you know it’s bad). Diversity is extremely low in this company, older white men lead the company and only talk about sports and try to intimidate others in efforts of covering up their insecurities of being a low-quality leader. The disconnect between the leadership team and the ones below is horrible. Leadership constantly jump into projects and mess everything up, and then leaves it to the rest of the team to fix it, then leadership comes back and asks why the quality of the work is bad. There is no clear direction for the company as of now, and it’s constant “putting out fires” in preparation for more fires to come. It’s really unfortunate because the product is great, and Canoe has a great advantage compared to its competitors, but the reason why it won’t be as successful is because of the team leading the initiatives. Leadership does not bother responding (or even listening) to what we all have to say, and it is extremely difficult to get a hold of any of them even though they claim they have an open-door policy. Many people have quit because they had no career progression path possible for them, because no one has time for each other!

Talented team, but limited growth opportunities

Pros

Canoe has many smart and hardworking people, and the team is generally supportive. The company is solving an interesting problem in the alternatives space, and employees often get exposure to different parts of the business in a fast-paced startup environment.

Cons

Career development and advancement opportunities can be limited, and there isn’t always a clear path for long-term growth. Priorities shift frequently and processes are still evolving, which can create confusion around ownership and strategy. Leadership communication and direction can sometimes feel inconsistent, and stronger alignment across teams would help improve execution and morale.

Not the Company I Originally Started Working For

Pros

Good pay, hybrid flexibility, and SOME great leaders.

Cons

- When I first joined Canoe, it felt like the company was on the verge of something truly special. Over time, however, that sense of momentum and vision has significantly diminished. - Severe lack of career growth. - There has been a noticeable loss of long-tenured, high-performing employees in recent months, leading to concerns about retention and continuity. - Some hiring decisions have felt misaligned with the company’s needs, creating additional strain on existing teams. - Leadership decisions can feel reactive rather than strategic, with limited advance communication before major organizational changes. This often results in teams scrambling to adjust. - Employee satisfaction scores have declined, and while action plans have been introduced, execution has felt inconsistent or incomplete. - I’ve seen many talented individuals join excited about the mission, only to leave feeling discouraged and disconnected from the company’s long-term vision.
