I have been working at Capstone Publishers full-time

    Pros

Product development is passionate about books and it shows in the quality of the product. Flexibility here is amazing. If you have kids, this is the place to be. People that work here are really talented and wonderful in general. Benefits are pretty sweet too.

    Cons

Employees are so overworked and most employees talk constantly about leaving the company. Product development suffers when someone leaves because they don't hire a full time employee to replace them. Timelines are even more rushed than other publishing companies because they're constantly reorganizing and switching you around. HR managers do not care about employee complaints so things don't change. Also, getting promoted is hard to impossible.

    Advice to Management

Please pay attention to the people who work so hard at making the products that you are so proud of. Consider what they have to do to create a book before you create unnecessary organizational delays for them. Also a competitive salary does not mean ' base minimum'. Please be a little generous for the amount of work that is expected. That will help engagement.

I worked at Capstone Publishers full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Working with wonderful creative people that give their full heart, and soul to the books they work on. Flexible schedule, and discount on books.

    Cons

Management micro manages EVERYTHING and drives out great people. Everyone is overworked, and turnaround time is too small for most projects.

    Advice to Management

    Don't ignore employee feedback

    Pros

I absolutely love the people of Capstone, the dedication, energy and spirit of everyone is truly inspiring on a daily basis. There is always new challenges and opportunities to learn new skills, it's never boring and upper management works very hard to make everyone feel appreciated.
The benefits are amazing and the health care is the best!

    Cons

The pros far outweigh any small issues that are always going to be in any workplace.

    Advice to Management

Keep doing all the things you do that make this a great place to work.

    Pros

Editors and designers who really take pride in their work!
Innovative attitude, but sometimes the innovations of only a select few are valued
A fun atmosphere a lot of the time, with opportunities for employees to connect with each other.
    Fantastic benefits

    Cons

Management makes decisions based on factors about which they know little.
    Micro-management to the nth degree
Money spent on re-orgs, advisors, consultants--with little payoff for rank and file employees
Compensation not up to par with other publishers

    Pros

Great company culture! Kind, helpful, and respectful coworkers. Great products, services, and resources being sold. A wonderful customer service department, and management that truly cares.

    Cons

Some overlap of products being sold creates a slightly challenging environment to sales staff. However, I am still new to the company and have a lot to learn.

    Advice to Management

Keep it up! I haven't had a chance to interact with the upper management quite yet, but do feel that it would be available if necessary. My direct manager has been great, always an open-door environment and has been very helpful through my training/initial work phase.

    Cons

The company is growing, so with that comes some growing pains with processes.

I worked at Capstone Publishers full-time

    Pros

There are a lot of nice people at Capstone. It's not a die hard workforce and workaholics are not created there. They value philanthropy and volunteerism and have great benefits. There are a lot of really talented and creative people to learn from.

The best part, is that at Capstone, you are a part of creating books kids want to and can read. If this resonates with you, and you can afford to make about half of what your worth, Capstone is a match for you.

    Cons

Working at Capstone is a dream job...until. Until you walk in the door and you realize how depressed everyone is. Until you find out that a groggy digital business hoards all the resources. Until you work with the sales department. Until you learn how little customers mean to the executive team.

The publishing industry is full of many amazing and passionate people. And creating children's books is a wonderful opportunity. But all of that is lost at the top at Capstone. They pay very low, even for publishing, they have very little diversity, and are very good at disenfranchising and undervaluing their top employees. People are openly disengaged and negative, it makes the days pretty long. The executive team openly ignores all of these issues.

I worked at Capstone Publishers full-time

    Pros

Passionate, friendly employees with tremendous talent and strong commitment to quality. Very good benefits package and pleasant work environments. There's an overall family feel amongst the employees and they offer a casual dress code and flexible scheduling.

    Cons

Unclear direction from the top causes lost efficiencies due to competing and often conflicting priorities. Key skill areas are not present and this puts significant strain on the long term employees to do more which erodes morale. Not enough investment in technology burdens creativity and agility.
