I have been working at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

-Work with an amazing Project Manager.
-Free fitness classes and an onsite gym that costs peanuts to join.
    -Cafe with affordable healthy options.
    -Benefits are pretty good.
    -Accessible office location.

    Cons

-Projects are mishandled at every level.
    -There's never any accountability.
-Incompetent people thrive here. Competent ones leave or are fired.
-My department has not promoted one person yet.
-Hire a ton of contractors that know nothing about healthcare only a couple months before our busiest time of the year. Oh, and there's no one to train them.
    -Departments and divisions are siloed.
-Lots of red tape just to get things approved.
-Never have schedules or enough time to get things done properly.
-Systems are ancient and always slow, have major issues, or require lots of money to overhaul.
-Too reactive and not proactive enough.
-Moving to another position in the company is complicated and time-consuming.
-No work life balance unless you demand it. You have to tell yourself that you're not working extra hours without comp time or pay. Don't expect CareFirst to openly offer you either.
-HUGE PHI concerns. It's amazing to me that contractors have access to such sensitive member information on a daily basis.
-Not all offices are created equal.
-Too many personalities are allowed to remain that way.
-Change happens far too much. If you make any comments about this, you're told, "Maybe this isn't the place for you." Not a great thing to hear during your first year.

    Advice to Management

Weed out the bad employees. Reward and promote the good ones. Your PMO department needs an overhaul and more focus needs to be placed on getting good Project Managers and Business Analysts that know what they're doing. Hire less temps and more permanent employees. Get people help so they aren't working on projects and day-to-day work at the same time.

I have been working at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great health benefits and vacation days

    Cons

In the underwriting department, if you aren't part of the "in crowd" they force you out. People that are favorites are allowed to miss deadlines, avoid responding to questions. Those that are considered black sheep are micro managed and documented for any detail whether real or imagined.

    Advice to Management

Take a look at your underwriting department; there's a reason CF failed the MAR audit. Coverups by management have us non-management employees looking for our first opportunity to leave.

I have been working at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, including good healthcare, welllness incentive plans, gym on premises, exercise classes and frequent give aways. Good HR structure in place so there's less nonsense going on.

    Cons

How great the company feels relies heavily on how the direct management behaves. As always a bad boss can make or break any work experience.

    Advice to Management

Reward the good and deal with the bad or unpleasant.

I worked at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits, and mid-level managers who actually know how to manager people for success.

    Cons

Senior Managers have no concept how to manage people. They are completely self absorbed. There is no transparency with personnel and business ethics are non-existent. They bully associates and can be very demeaning.

I have always learned that a manager is responsible for the actions of their subordinates. Not at CareFirst, no one in a senior management position takes responsibility for anything especially when it results from their incompetence. Result... high turnover and toxic work environment. Pathetic, may sound like a great place to work but it is not. The only "care" at "CareFirst" is how much money can they make at anyone's expense.

    Advice to Management

Try taking responsibility for your division and take an active part in the professional activities of your personnel. Stop worrying about how good you look to the Board of Directors and focus on how you can be a better leader to your people.

I have been working at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    - Great benefits

    - If you take the initiative there is a lot to learn and the opportunity to do so

    - A great place to start out of college if you're nervous about the work world (Don't expect to work here more than 2 years and be happy)

    Cons

    - Culture:
^ No UNITY: every team is out to compete politically with one another, every division is competing with one another. There is no sense of unity across the CareFirst teams. Why not create a culture where the teams can work together?

Result: Requests made that require multiple teams take months to complete due to arguments

-Management: Most but not all, are looking out for their own best interest. It doesn't feel like they genuinely care about their employees but more about the work they want delivered.

Result: Temporarily hard workers, do'ers that keep the lights on. After 2 years they lose motivation. Turnover after 3 to 4 years.

    Advice to Management

    - Lead to create leaders
    - Don't squash creativity
    - Make the most of people's ability - strategically move them into positions to better the company
    - Be bold, change the culture completely - get rid of management that exemplifies selfish behavior
    - Bring back unity
