I have been working at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, including good healthcare, welllness incentive plans, gym on premises, exercise classes and frequent give aways. Good HR structure in place so there's less nonsense going on.

    Cons

How great the company feels relies heavily on how the direct management behaves. As always a bad boss can make or break any work experience.

    Advice to Management

Reward the good and deal with the bad or unpleasant.

I worked at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Benefits, and mid-level managers who actually know how to manager people for success.

    Cons

Senior Managers have no concept how to manage people. They are completely self absorbed. There is no transparency with personnel and business ethics are non-existent. They bully associates and can be very demeaning.

I have always learned that a manager is responsible for the actions of their subordinates. Not at CareFirst, no one in a senior management position takes responsibility for anything especially when it results from their incompetence. Result... high turnover and toxic work environment. Pathetic, may sound like a great place to work but it is not. The only "care" at "CareFirst" is how much money can they make at anyone's expense.

    Advice to Management

Try taking responsibility for your division and take an active part in the professional activities of your personnel. Stop worrying about how good you look to the Board of Directors and focus on how you can be a better leader to your people.

I have been working at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    - Great benefits

    - If you take the initiative there is a lot to learn and the opportunity to do so

    - A great place to start out of college if you're nervous about the work world (Don't expect to work here more than 2 years and be happy)

    Cons

    - Culture:
^ No UNITY: every team is out to compete politically with one another, every division is competing with one another. There is no sense of unity across the CareFirst teams. Why not create a culture where the teams can work together?

Result: Requests made that require multiple teams take months to complete due to arguments

-Management: Most but not all, are looking out for their own best interest. It doesn't feel like they genuinely care about their employees but more about the work they want delivered.

Result: Temporarily hard workers, do'ers that keep the lights on. After 2 years they lose motivation. Turnover after 3 to 4 years.

    Advice to Management

    - Lead to create leaders
    - Don't squash creativity
    - Make the most of people's ability - strategically move them into positions to better the company
    - Be bold, change the culture completely - get rid of management that exemplifies selfish behavior
    - Bring back unity

I worked at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield full-time

    Pros

This position will teach you a lot and the knowledge gained can be carried over to other office nursing positions. Compensation not too bad, giveaways, chances to win gas cards and other items given periodically. Communication within the company good with regular town hall meetings to keep you in the loop. Usually a bonus and raise given every year.

    Cons

For this position, the productivity standard is a system set up for failure. As with most jobs, there is a productivity standard which I have no problem with, but me at least a reasonable opportunity to meet it. In this position the productivity expected is rarely if ever met because there are constant interruptions to your workflow. Priority appeals have to be attended to immediately with very short completion times and the clock stops on all the other appeals you are working on as you have to put them aside to attend to the never ending influx of priority cases. I personally do not like to compromise quality for quantity as my work is a direct reflection on my professionalism. But in this position, you might have to compromise your quality for quantity just to keep your job. I am not an adrenaline junkie and do not thrive on a work place that causes high, unyielding stress, emotionalism and resentment for the position. You can stay after work every night trying to play catch-up and never ever achieve it. And lastly, don't go on vacation because when you come back it will take you at least one month to catch back up the place you were before you left. Now have that in the back of your mind on vacation trying relax on a beach somewhere......

    Advice to Management

I had no problems with management and/or my coworkers. All in the office were going through the same high stress and anxiety no matter what position they held. Management was aware of how difficult it was to meet productivity and expressed this but they didn't create the productivity standard but still had to appropriately rate performance. We all supported each other as much as possible. Management was always approachable and assistance was available when needed.

I worked at CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The majority of people that work at CareFirst are very nice.

    Cons

90% of their employees are contractors and are treated horrendously. For instance, everyone received a candy bag for Halloween except for their contracted employees. They do a very great job at making you feel excluded and less than what you are worth. There are also too many employees and not enough work, so most of the time I was bored. Also if you are a contractor, they do not offer you BlueCross insurance, instead you are offered United Healthcare, which is very ironic.

    Advice to Management

Stop with the politics. This company is too large to be having so many internal, negative issues about meniscal topics.
