I have been working at ChildServe full-time

    Pros

The mission of supporting children with special healthcare needs is important. Many of their employees believe in that mission.

    Cons

No paid holidays. Vacation, sick time, and holidays comes from the same "pot" of hours. Typically just shy of 8 hrs is what's earned every two weeks.

    Advice to Management

Paid holidays would be a major improvement.

    Pros

Great communication among co-workers and an overall fun work environment. This clinic is growing fast and has continuing education opportunities through the Des Moines clinic.

    Cons

I do not have a whole lot of cons in general. One is that since the Iowa City clinic is new to the Childserve family we are still undergoing many changes and we do not yet have all the resources that the Johnston clinic has.

    Advice to Management

I have no advice for management at this time.

I have been working at ChildServe full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The kids are amazing! It is so rewarding coming in to see their happy faces. The TCU/CCU is also a wonderful place because you get to do acute care skills, respiratory skills, and nursing skills all at the same time. It gives you a great chance to become comfortable with trachs, vents, and complex kids.

    Cons

The shifts are 12 hours, but can be negotiable.

    Pros

Great support to complete a CFY year. Get great experience in the field. Pay for some CEUs. Great team and collaborative environment.

    Cons

Scheduling is can get overwhelming with times and amount of clients on caseload. Benefits are marginal. Not much motivation to make someone want to stay long term.

    Advice to Management

Take better steps to make young employees want to stay and veterans to apply so you don't have a full staff of CFYs.

I worked at ChildServe (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The environment and kids are wonderful. It's a beautiful facility and they offer many important specialized therapies. Lots of people there who are very dedicated to helping children and their families.

    Cons

Scheduling was disorganized and poorly planned. In an effort to cover shifts at all costs, there was a lack of consistency for kids and staff. More forethought about matching children to staff needs to be given. Throwing random strangers in a home at the last minute just to cover the shift happened way too often. Also, not much room for advancement, there were a lot of "office favorites".

    Advice to Management

More forethought needs to be given to staffing. Also, more respect and opportunity for advancement for your nurses in the field.

    Negative Outlook

I worked at ChildServe full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The kids are great and many of their staff are outstanding. However they get zero support from management.

    Cons

Most poorly run an managed company I have ever worked for. They are unresponsive to employee and patients needs. Ignorance is bliss!!!

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to employee needs and downsize managerial positions.

    Pros

Gain experience working with children with various disabilities
Form relationships with children, families, and staff

    Cons

Don't always get the amount of hours you want
    Communication isn't a strong point

I have been working at ChildServe full-time

    Pros

Don't work from the building, don't have to go in often. Have a lot of input for your own hours. Very relaxed, overhead is not uptight.

    Cons

Kids can be a handful. Hours can be weird, you may not get all the hours you want. Paperwork can be really tedious.
