Great Company Slowly Losing Its Way

Pros

You'll work with some of the best C++ and Compiler developers in the industry. Most of the staff are friendly and hardworking and dedicated to their job.

Cons

Upper-management and operations are often quick to dismiss criticisms or recommendations. As such chronic and on-going problems never get resolved Lots of recent high-profile departures. Difficulty acquiring funds for projects, staff members, raises and team celebrations despite recent investment. This is exacerbated by nepotism in the operations team. Teams will have a difficult time getting hardware yet certain staff members will have things bought for them on company finance. Salary process is completely opaque making it impossible to tell how you are doing in relation to anyone else or if you are even on track for a raise. We used to do bonus' and switched for a raise system only to stop giving out raises. Only way to do so is to threaten to leave at which point they will scramble to sort something out. There is no HR department and complaints are regularly ignored. There are no systems in place to ensure disputes are fairly handled or ever addressed. Many full-time employees are stuck in that cycle of doing generic and boring work for projects because they are the only ones with the experience necessary. Half of the time this is a result of project mismanagement wasting peoples time on mundane tasks. Ironically, Interns end up having a better time because they have more focused goals due to the short time they are there. For the niche work the benefits such as salary and holidays are pretty average. You can probably go elsewhere to do C++ and get paid more.

Pros

This place is full of great people, and has a good atmosphere. - Work with some really great talent. - Work on setting industry standards. - Work on interesting problems. - Work in interesting industries. - Generally good team ownership of projects. - Cutting edge in the area's it works in. - Semi flexible work hours (be in for core hours). - Great people. - Free fruit and lots of internal activities.

Cons

Most of the talent here could get better compensation and career opportunities elsewhere. - Pay is on par with the lower end of industry. - Holiday is on par with the lower end of industry. - Promotion opportunities are v.limited, there is a long queue. - Lots of talent is leaving recently. - Senior admin feel like amateurs too often. - Pay/Employee reviews haven't happened in well over a year (see above). - Some managers/employees work excessive overtime. - Office noise can be insane. - Be sure to use the provided sanitary products on entry so as not to get ill.

Thankyou for your review. We are aware that our compensation levels are not as competitive as they could be. As we develop our products and sign more projects we sincerely hope to remedy this. We offer 30 days holiday per year with a bonus day for each year of service up to a maximum of 5 (Total of 35 days). We have lost some members of staff but a certain amount of turnover is normal and to be expected as people move for personal and family reasons, or to experience other career opportunities. We have developed various communication channels (anonymised and non-anomymised) for all staff to give feedback and suggestions for improvement, if it is felt something is not being handled appropriately and we actively welcome this feedback in the spirit of continuous improvement. We have had 2 pay reviews in the past year, in June 2018 and December 2018. Development Reviews and Job Grade Reviews were put on hold because we were working on an improved review process and structure. This was communicated to all staff and their feedback was encouraged on the draft processes and much feedback was incorporated into the final design. These have now been rolled out and are been actively used. We are committed to monitoring and encouraging the reduction of overtime and promoting a healthy work/life balance. We are aware of the noise levels and will be shortly starting a consultation exercise to determine the pain points and how we can resolve/mitigate them. If staff are ill, we encourage them to self-certificate on sick leave, or work from home if they feel OK but are infectious! We provide the sanitiser to reduce the chance of any cross-infection. Growing a company on all fronts is always a challenge and a journey : the senior management team need to know how people are feeling so we can discuss problems; that is why our internal channels are so important and we encourage all staff to use them. We are in an exciting place commercially but there is still a lot to do ! Karon Davis VP Operations/Director Codeplay Software
