For a large company, there's alot to love.

Apr 26, 2021 - Hardware discipline Engineer in Houston, TX

      Pros

Dow takes safety seriously. It impresses me how much they focus on requiring their employees to do work safely. They also put a large dose of responsibility and trust in their engineers to do what they think best in various situations. They'll give you plenty of rope if you ask for it. Also, most managers were already reasonable about your vacation requests. After Covid, they seem to be even more flexible if you book around big deliveries.

      Cons

The corporate organization is wierd at best. Often times managers will preside over groups working on tasks completely outside their wheelhouse. They know little about the groups efforts and it's more of a chore and therefore don't go to bat hard enough for that group.

      Good company to work for

Jun 5, 2021 - Production Engineer in Orange, TX
      Recommend
      CEO Approval
      Business Outlook

      Pros

Flexible schedule. Competitive Salary. Career Opportunities are there after you work in your role for 2-5 years, depending on your work ethic. Good benefits (including employee stock options), good leaders who care about safety of the employees. Nice people to work with, there is a good team spirit. Good food at the cafeteria and all the local places around the plant.

      Cons

There is not a training program for new engineers across multiple disciplines. You will learn as the problems come. This is the after math of the split up between Dow and Dupont. You tend to work extra hours a lot since the plant is short staffed, which they are trying to address but changes probably won't happen soon. Maintenance is a weak point since there are not enough mechanics to address all the issues that plant has. You always have to fight to get resources, which gets annoying quickly. The site's infrastructure is bad. All the roads/rail road crossings/parking lots at the site in Orange, TX are in bad shape. They need some TLC or the maintenance costs for all the site's vehicles will go up because they keep hitting these pot holes. Some buildings are very old so when it rains, it leaks.

      Good benefits, outdated workplace culture

      Jun 12, 2021 - Scientist

      Business Outlook

      Pros

-Benefits are good -Lots of interesting research if you know where to look -Job stability -If you want to move laterally, it's easy to do so. -If you like small town culture, you'll fit in great. Midland is a rumour mill. -If you are married in a dual career situation (and your partner is a scientist, they don't care about non-scientist spouses).

      Cons

-I&D doesn't match the marketing & ERGs are pretty useless. Only matters if you manager & coworkers care. -If you're married & you both work at Dow, it's great (i.e: couple privilege). If not, you'll have a harder time integrating into the Dow family culture. -Company can be really paternalistic & is in denial about the gender equality issues. I.e: don't be surprised if a male leader will try to plan out your career for you without your input because "they know best." You might also be told that you need to "prepare yourself to be sponsored" even though the men are never told how they need to get over their own implicit biases and become better leaders. -You will meet many amazing women, but notice that their career advancement has been much slower and you will wonder why that is. So if your a women, be aware it might take you a lot longer to advance. -There's a tendency towards group think at Dow, so there's the defensiveness that comes with it if you try to improve anything. -People constantly complain about lack of resources to finance high-risk R&D. -Lots of marketing, but you wonder if it's legit most of the time. -Resistance to change and resistance to spend money upgrading infrastructure. -Company is run according to Wall Street. Short-term vs. long-term priorities. That's going to hit them like a hard brick soon when Dow can't compete with competitors since they haven't been investing properly in long-term research. -Company is pretty much an old dinosaur that needs to rediscover its roots as an R&D company. The culture is great for boomers, but not ready for Gen Z or millennials. -Company is rife with mismanagement and bureaucracy. It's frustrating to get things done. -Your network is what propels you forward. Figure out the political game and be a white man, you will advance quickly in 10 years.

      Pros

Benefits, Vacation, and Most the people you'll work will are stand up people.

      Cons

Big company means they care zero about you, wrong people in leadership, they are more concerned with being your boss and actually leading the team to success. Stressful! work-life is non existent. They would rather hire someone based on their race rather than their fit for the job to keep diversity and inclusion numbers up.
