    Positive Outlook

I worked at ESS Group full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great place for engineers/scientists to grow their resume in energy, coastal, or water resources. ESS is unique because it's a small, privately owned firm, that works on large, complex, high-profile projects (not a gorilla firm). Employees aren't silo-ed and have the access and opportunity to work with everyone in the company, including corporate-level executives who are industry-veterans and experts in their fields.

    Cons

As a small firm working on big, complex projects it can be a challenging environment. There can be burn out, frustration, peaks/valleys in morale, and limitations. Turnover can be high, but that's the industry as a whole. Successful employees have can-do attitudes, roll up their sleeves, and can trouble shoot. As a privately-owned firm decisions aren't always made democratically - that can be good and bad. Bonuses and salary increases are earned, not offered as incentive.

    Advice to Management

Stay positive, strive for democracy and clarity, and remember that the customer is always right (even if they're not). Past employees can be advocates, so don't burn those bridges!

    Pros

ESS provides opportunities to work on interesting and technically challenging projects, with a focus on innovative projects that require special expertise. ESS offers the ability to work across disciplines and learn new skills or obtain certifications. The people are dedicated and friendly, management is fairly laid back.

    Cons

Compensation level isn't quite competitive compared to larger consulting firms, staff resources and project budgets can sometimes be tight as a result, and staff retention can be an issue. Small size makes internal promotions difficult.

    Advice to Management

Reevaluate salaries as compared to competitors, focus on retaining mid-level staff for promotions to management level rather than hiring from outside.

I have been working at ESS Group full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Exciting cutting edge projects. Strong responsive Management Team. Great team environment. Fair compensation. It is a high end technical consulting company, not for commodity services.

    Cons

Personal growth is constrained by size but is more focused on mentoring due to large project assignments. Could improve benefits package, more flexibility in PTO.

    Advice to Management

Maintain the great "can do" responsive culture of the company, high quality of product, and teamwork environment.

I have been working at ESS Group full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Fantatic opportunities to work on a range of extremely challenging projects. Lots of flexibility to work in a way that is in the client's best interest as long as it makes good business sense.

    Cons

Only two offices and limited opportunities to work at home, benefits are weak compared to others in industry. Limited training, few perks, but will support professional development.

    Advice to Management

Change is needed soon...or risk losing many of your best and brightest.

    Pros

Small company that does large - complex projects. Provides lots of opportunity for those seeking to expand their horizons...

    Cons

~25% of technical staff sit on the "management team", which previously resulted in an inverted-pyramid of staff. Recently this trend has been changing, however it's slow going.

    Pros

Interesting new project that are cutting edge in the indusrty and the chance to work with some very large, international companies throughout the country.

    Cons

High turnover, often a short stop for most people due to lack of pay and efforts are often overlooked by managment.

    Advice to Management

Don't low ball and cheat your employees out of the money that they deserve. There is a large sum of money being made and littel distribution of that money!!
