Pros

WFH option: With Covid, Cision of course went remote and then continued to offer that option despite other companies returning to the office. The WFH option was probably the best thing about Cision as it saved me 2+ hours a day of commute time. Decent Compensation Package: At hire, my supervisor offered compensation that I considered fair and satisfactory. Then I initially was rewarded with a very nice raise not long after I started at Cision, but once the equity firm took over and my former supervisor was replaced, they decided that my work didn't deserve more compensation, despite my taking on more responsibility. Great Colleagues: There were a few coworkers who were really great to work with. I learned a lot from them and I miss them.

Cons

- Inconsistent Medical Insurance Benefits: Healthcare coverage trended down in quality but up in expense every year that I was there, more than doubling in the cost of premiums within the 4 years I was there. - Challenging Company Culture: There existed a noticeable discrepancy between the company values and the actual appreciation for expertise and seeing employees as humans. Despite verbal acknowledgment in some cases, genuine value and recognition were lacking. - Management and Communication Issues: During the last three years of my employment with Cision, the company had frequent changes in leadership and management. (More than a few CEOs!) Departmental leadership was also prone to very erratic decision-making as well as a lack of consistent and clear communication and forethought. This management style, influenced by the ELT and equity leadership, led to constant shifts in project objectives, causing a lot of undue (but preventable) stress. These last minute changes and the great gaping hole of collaboration had some managers and coworkers attempting to blame others frequently, making for a toxic and challenging work environment. - Lack of Recognition: Despite consistent positive feedback and appreciation from many of my colleagues and from other managers, feedback from my (last) direct supervisor was contradictory and unsupportive. So in my last year, I felt insecure in my job, which was further amplified by the small-scale departmental layoffs initiated in late 2022. Basically that decided it for me. I got out just ahead of major layoffs in mid-2023.

Pros

Decent work life balance, some good teammates who care about each other and the company makes payroll on time (for most people)

Cons

The executives can’t stand each other and can’t make decisions, so the rest of us were left running in circles. Revenue has declined every year and it keeps getting worse. We had at least 4 layoffs a year and they never communicate them — one day your coworkers just don’t show up. Everyone is constantly looking over their shoulder. The best people have already left because they see the writing on the wall. The products aren’t good and aren’t getting better. They keep talking about Nexus but no one knows what it means or who even wants it. Numbers change depending on who’s presenting them and why. There’s no consistent story on targets internally, which makes it impossible to plan or prioritize anything. PE ownership and puppets in the C Suite meant that every decision gets filtered through “what does this look like for the exit” rather than what’s actually good for the business or the people in it. Compensation hasn’t kept up, especially after layoffs when your workload doubles and nothing changes in your paycheck. No real investment in development either. Bottom line: you’re a headcount, not a person. And they manage by spreadsheet not logic.
