Lots of vacation time, but can't afford to go anywhere - Web Developer Columbia University Employee Review

Pros

Tuition remission has helped several of my coworkers get their master's, or their spouses, their bachelor's. The benefits are great and vacation time generous. Coworkers are really good people. You'll never be asked to work overtime.

Cons

The administration is very tight-fisted, and high performance is not rewarded, unless you are very astute politically. There is little interest in the final outcome of a project; rather, the meetings, emails, and tones of discussion around a project. There is little collaboration between groups, so the wheel may get reinvented many times over. There are some people who seem to have given up hope and just go through the motions. It is really just a company like any other, trying to maximize profits, but there is somehow an attitude that because it is a place of higher learning, employees should feel grateful to be there.

Pros

The benefits and work-life balance were generally reasonable.

Cons

The Internal Audit department was one of the most disappointing work environments I have experienced. Columbia promotes a culture of collaboration, trust, and support, but that was not reflected in my experience. Leadership micromanaged employees to an excessive degree, especially on work-from-home days. If you stepped away from your computer for a few minutes, it felt like you had to justify your whereabouts. Rather than encouraging employees to learn and grow, management often made people feel foolish for asking questions or not knowing something immediately. The atmosphere was stressful, morale was low, and trust between leadership and staff was virtually nonexistent. I would not recommend this department to anyone seeking a supportive or professional work environment.
