Pros

Chances are you are reading this because you were offered a position at Coyote Logistics, but aren't really sure of what that position entails. Let me clear it up for you. You will start at Coyote with a salary of 40k, which isn't too bad as most of the new hires are college grads. But you will be working from 7:00 - 5:00 every day, sometimes later; and you will be required to come in on Saturdays once or twice every few months. Your job title will be a "National Account Manager", don't let the "manager" in that title fool you. Every. Single. Person. at the company is a National Account Manager, aside from the actual team managers. Essentially, you will spend your entire day cold calling trucking companies trying to sell them "loads". Coyote is a 3PL (3rd party logistics) company. This simply means that they win contracts with companies like Coke for example to move say, 1000 loads of Coke product a year, it is YOUR job to sell each load to a random trucking company for an unbelievably horrible price. I worked there for 6 months, and I had trucking companies laughing in my face daily because of the horrible rates Coyote allowed us to offer. But the work isn't the worst park. Coyote typically hires fraternity guys and sorority girls, so you can imagine what your day-to-day work experience will be like. Personally I could not stand the people I worked with, a bunch of HUGE bros, not gentlemen at all. The ladies weren't much better. There is a HUGE clique at Coyote, and if you're not a part of it, expect to be an outcast. Only the frattiest of guys and the prettiest of girls get to be in it. In conclusion, you're working 55-60 hours a week, for 33k after taxes, with ABSOLUTELY NO 401k match. But theres free beer on Fridays, and cake once a month. As if that makes up for not matching your retirement contribution!? Do yourself a favor and just work some where else. Sure this is a "laid-back" environment that lets you wear jeans, but take the first step of your career seriously. I had SO much trouble looking for a serious job in finance because all of my potential employers know what a joke Coyote is and they assume I'm the typical Coyote frat boy. It is commission based as well, but every person I know who works there doesn't hit commission until at least their 9th-12th month there. And hitting commission is totally contingent on the trucking market in the nation, and sometimes it's nearly impossible to hit. If you don't hit your commission quota, YOU owe COYOTE the difference.

Cons

- 55-60 hour weeks - 40k starting salary, 33k after taxes. Works out to about 11-12 dollars an hour after taxes. - NO 401k contribution, let that be enough to turn this job down. - They do not hire professional employees - You will NOT be taken seriously applying for your next job as they will know the type of people Coyote tends to hire. - NO room for advancement, maybe 2-3% of all employees are promoted to a team manager position. That's literally as high-up as you can go, with very little pay increase. - Very confusing, and hard to hit commission structure. You need to sell loads at a profit to the company, and whatever the profit margin is, contributes to your commission. You need to hit $3,333 in profit each month. Anything more than that, you get a fraction of. BUT if you sell less than that (which I guarantee you will more than not) say, $2,800 for example, then YOU owe COYOTE $533 dollars that month. Good luck making rent!
