Pros

You will get a check.

Cons

It has taken me 6 weeks to start working in a Temporary, I say Temporary, assignment with ESS. I can't imagine that they would subject their school clients to a long and cattle-like process like this. I applied to be a sub in Philadelphia. I was trying to continue working another job while waiting to start subbing via ESS. When you need help with this extremely long and drawn-out process, no one answers the phone at ESS. They will put you on hold and then never pick up. There will ALWAYS be another step or training you need to take before you can start working. They have their recruiters handling too large of a load of teachers to onboard. I was told 500 a day. So you can imagine that it is taking a looong time to get started. I never got any straight answers up front from ESS about HOW LONG this was going to take. And then finally when I was "hired" (because who would ask you to go through this process if you weren't already getting hired?) I still didn't get access to Frontline to start seeing and accepting assignments for more than 24 hours. Then....I still needed to wait for ANOTHER cert called an 06 that I need to initiate. The only thing ESS daoes is email you with YOUR next task to complete until you can start making money. (Let me back up again and remind you all that this is all for a TEMP job.) Until then, you still make only $125/day. Shame on school systems for using this company and putting teachers through this process where our time, financial needs, and energy are completely disregarded.

Pros

The corporate support and recruitment team are excellent; they are professional and highly responsive. The onboarding and training process was comprehensive and genuinely prepared me for the realities of substitute teaching. The role offers a great deal of flexibility, opportunities to engage with the local population, and a clear pipeline for those seeking long-term subbing positions or a path toward a full-time teaching career. It is an excellent environment for networking within the education sector.

Cons

The day-to-day experience is heavily dependent on the specific district and school culture, which can vary significantly. Some districts provide free lunch, others don’t. Unfortunately, there is often a lack of respect at the school level; substitute staff are sometimes treated as expendable rather than as valued members of the team. There is a lack of job security, as pre-booked assignments are frequently canceled on short notice to accommodate other preferred substitutes. Subs have to work 4 days a month and it’s hard to meet when people are constantly being dropped from jobs. Additionally, the compensation is extremely low, and the benefits package is insufficient, making it difficult to rely on this position as a primary source of income.
